Last Saturday (29 Aug), we celebrated the amazing tutors who give their time, energy and heart to our children and youth every week. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿงก

The tutors and children bonded over ice breakers, where our tutors shared little stories about themselves and gave the children and youth a chance to get to know the people behind the lessons! One child even shared how a tutorโ€™s story inspired him and strengthened his desire to follow in his footsteps and join National Cadet Corps (NCC) as a Co-Curricular Activity! ๐Ÿช–

Our children also presented their tutors with thoughtful gifts, including handmade surprises and delicious homemade brownies! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฅน

Thank you to all our tutors for showing up, cheering our young ones on and making every Saturday a little more meaningful. Your encouragement goes beyond the classroom, and your impact reaches far beyond each lesson.

Happy Teacherโ€™s Day to everyone who helps others learn, grow and believe in whatโ€™s possible! ๐ŸŒฑ

Honouring Their Motherโ€™s Journey ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š

Suay Peng and her sisters may not remember exactly how their mother first came to Yong-en, but they remember that it became a place she enjoyed during her retirement years.

After she passed away, the sisters continued supporting Yong-en through annual donations โ€“ a way of honouring her memory and giving back to a community that had once been part of her life.

What began with their mother has become a family tradition of giving, carried forward by her daughters.

Some connections stay with us long after someone is gone. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

Suay Pengโ€™s story is one of many that have been woven into Yong-enโ€™s 30-year journey.

Think our seniors can take on HYROX? ๐Ÿ‘€

They didn't just try it, they owned it! ๐Ÿ’ช

This month, we introduced Hyrox-inspired workstation exercises, brought to life with 24 volunteers from Kering, adapted to fit everyone's mobility and strength level.

Our seniors approached every station with focus and enthusiasm that surprised even our volunteers, proving fun and dementia care go hand in hand.

Many Kering volunteers were back for their second CSR day with us. "Some seniors actually remembered us!" one shared with excitement. ๐Ÿงก

Dementia looks different in everyone as some needed more guidance than others. But at the end of the day, our seniors gave every station their genuine best and completed them all. Kudos to them!

Thank you Kering, our pilot partner for Yong-en Cafรฉ and Hyrox-inspired fitness, and our seniors' biggest cheerleaders ๐Ÿ™Œ

At Yong-en Dementia Day Care, we take a strength-focused approach, recognising each senior's capabilities and tailoring our programme to engage and enrich their lives. Know someone who could benefit? Reach us at 6309 0574.

When Jane brought her mother, Pauline, from the UK to Singapore in 2002, Yong-enโ€™s Dementia Day Care became an important source of care and companionship for their family for almost a decade.

After retiring, Jane wanted to give back to the community that had supported her family. Combining her creativity with a desire to serve, she began making and selling handmade crafts to raise funds for Yong-en. ๐Ÿงต

Since 2015, she has continued bringing her crafts to our charity events and bazaars.

What began with gratitude for the care her mother received has grown into more than a decade of giving.๐Ÿ’ซ

Janeโ€™s story is one of many that have shaped Yong-enโ€™s 30-year journey, reminding us that sometimes, the care we receive inspires us to care for others too.

Care That Never Retires ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š

Christina joined Yong-en in 2002 as a Care Associate, spending over 20 years caring for seniors living with dementia.

When she retired in 2023, she found herself missing the seniors and the joy of caring for them. A year later, she returned to Yong-en as a locum Care Associate.

โ€œI feel so happy knowing that some of them still remember me.โ€ ๐Ÿ’ญ

Today, Christina is also a member of Yong-en Active Hub , where she attends classes, picks up new skills and enjoys activities alongside fellow seniors.

From caring for seniors, to now growing older with them, Christinaโ€™s journey has come full circle.

For us, this is what community looks like: relationships that grow beyond a job, and a community you never quite stop being part of.

Christinaโ€™s is just one of the many stories that have have been woven into Yong-enโ€™s 30-year journey.

For our Dementia Day Care clients, the drivers from Caring Fleet Services Limited are more than just the people who bring them to and from our centre. They are familiar faces who help make each journey feel safe and reassuring.

Last Saturday, 22 August, 30 of their drivers gave up their day off to spend the morning with us. Through a 1.5-hour dementia awareness session, they learnt more about dementia, the signs and symptoms to look out for, and how they can better support the seniors in their care.

For someone living with dementia, patience, understanding and a familiar face can mean a lot.

Weโ€™re grateful to Caring Fleet for taking the time to learn, listen and show up for our seniors. ๐Ÿ’›

Coming Full Circle. ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š

Wen Jian first came to Yong-en as a student, attending our tuition programme while growing up.

Years later, after graduating from National University of Singapore (NUS) and starting his career at UOB, he found his way back to Yong-en โ€” this time as a volunteer tutor.

Having once received support, he now gives his time to encourage and guide children in the same community.

For us, this is what growth looks like: support that stays with you, and kindness that finds its way back to the next generation.

Wen Jianโ€™s story is one of many that have shaped Yong-enโ€™s 30-year journey.

For 30 years, weโ€™ve grown alongside our community.๐Ÿ

From our beginnings in Chinatown in 1996 to the work we do today, Yong-enโ€™s journey has been shaped by the changing needs of the community we serve.

Over the years, our programmes and reach have grown to support seniors, children, youth and families. But at the heart of our work, one thing has remained the same - walking alongside our community with care, dignity and compassion, while recognising the strengths in every individual.

Behind every milestone are the people who have made this journey possible - our staff, volunteers, donors, partners and, most importantly, the people we serve.

As we celebrate 30 years of service, we remember the people and stories that have shaped us along the way.

Over the coming weeks, weโ€™ll be sharing stories from our community. These are stories of support, growth, and giving back.

On 8 August, our children and youths took on the muddy trails of Clementi and Maju Forests, navigating uneven terrain, crossing fallen trees, and tackling unexpected challenges together.

Led by the children themselves, they made decisions, solved problems, and encouraged one another along the way. It was especially heartening to see two of our children from Indonesia right at home in nature. They embraced every muddy puddle and encouraged their peers, helping one another overcome obstacles along the trail. ๐Ÿ’š

Beyond the hike, the experience was about building confidence, resilience, and teamwork. These are the moments that shape character, create lasting memories, and help our children discover what they're capable of.

This meaningful experience was made possible through the generous support of Dow, enabling our children and youths to learn and grow beyond the classroom. Thank you for making experiences like this possible.
