THK Nursing Home Fostering a sense of community and enhancing quality of life for our residents

Thye Hua Kwan Nursing Home Limited (THKNH) is an IPC registered, non-profit voluntary welfare organisation, incorporated in 2013. Our nursing home in Singapore provides eldercare services in the Intermediate & Long Term Care Sector, and most of our clients come from financially strapped backgrounds, with 90% of them receiving the highest possible government subsidy level. We help anyone who needs help regardless of race, creed, language, culture, and religion.

Some of our nurses have a talent for more than caring for our residents. They make music too! 🎶

As Soul Sync, they get together to perform familiar favourites for our residents. They’ve seen residents who are usually quiet start singing, smiling or clapping along when they hear a song they know.

Music brings back memories, lifts spirits, and gets everyone moving. But it goes both ways. For our nurses, performing is a chance to step away from their daily duties and share something they love with residents and colleagues alike. It's how they unwind and recharge after a busy day.

A few weeks ago, a team from Morgan Lewis Stamford spent their Saturday at THK Nursing Home @ Hougang as part of the firm's annual Community Impact Week.

The morning was filled with games, karaoke singalongs, and plenty of laughter. Volunteers and residents also sat together to hand-stuff neck pillows, two for each resident, to give them a little extra comfort and support in their beds.

To top it off, the staff and partners of the firm pooled together a generous donation that will go towards everyday care essentials for our residents.

🐶 Every dog has a different personality.

Some happily greeted everyone in the room. Others were content to sit quietly beside a resident, waiting for the next gentle pat.

Through SOSD's Healing Paws programme, the volunteers and their dogs spent the morning with our residents, bringing smiles, warm interactions and moments of connection.

Thank you to the volunteers and their four-legged companions from SOSD Singapore for sharing your time with our residents. We look forward to welcoming you back.

As we celebrate Nurses Day on 1 August, we'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to all nurses, especially to our incredible teams at THK Nursing Home @ Hougang, THK Nursing Home @ Tanjong Katong, and THK Senior Care Centre @ Kaki Bukit.

Thank you for showing up each day with compassion, professionalism, and kindness, and for looking after our residents and clients the way you would your own family. Your care brings comfort when it's needed most, and we are grateful for everything you do.

Some volunteers lead activities. Others spend time with our residents. Eugene repairs commode chairs and wheelchairs that our residents rely on every day.

Before every repaired chair is returned, Eugene tests it himself to make sure it's ready for use.

Last month our residents were treated to an afternoon of classical favourites, familiar melodies, and film music by Dora and her friends from the UWCSEA String Quartet.

Some residents hummed along, while others closed their eyes and just listened. For many of our seniors, live music does more than entertain. Familiar melodies can ease anxiety, lift mood, and stir memories that words sometimes can't reach.

We're grateful that these Grade 10 & 11 students chose to give their time and talent freely, not for any recognition, but because they believed music could bring comfort and companionship to someone who might need it.

Thank you, Dora and the UWCSEA String Quartet, for a truly lovely afternoon.

Ten years ago, THK Nursing Home was awarded its first home in Hougang. This July, we've opened our second, right here in Tanjong Katong.

At THK Nursing Home, we have always believed that good care means seeing the whole person, not just their medical needs. Every space at our new Tanjong Katong nursing home was built with that in mind.

It started with a simple hello over a screen in May 2022.

That's how Mdm Yong Sui met her virtual friend, Xinni Fu, through a befriending programme that began during COVID-19 restrictions. Four years on, long after the precautions lifted, the calls have continued, every Sunday.

Mdm Yong Sui loves to share. Stories from her childhood in Malaysia. Her favourite foods. Her love for flowers, which shows up in everything she creates. Between arts and crafts, games, and conversation, each weekly call has become more than a catch-up. For Mdm Yong Sui, it's company, connection, and something to look forward to.
