📍628 Ang Mo Kio Market & Food Centre is home to Konomi Zen

Japanese food first became more widely known in Singapore during the 1980s and 1990s, when Japanese restaurants started appearing as trade and business links between Singapore and Japan grew. Dishes like donburi, tempura and sushi slowly gained popularity among locals.

Over time, some hawkers began adapting these dishes into simpler meals that could be prepared quickly and sold at neighbourhood prices. Today, stalls like Konomi Zen bring Japanese comfort food into the heartlands, offering rice bowls and bento sets that feel restaurant quality but remain affordable for everyday dining.

It is another example of how Singapore’s hawker culture continues to evolve, blending different food traditions while keeping meals accessible for the community.

🚖 Do you remember waiting here for a ride?

Sembawang Hill Estate Taxi Service Stand.
This unassuming taxi service stand at Sembawang Hills Estate dates back to the mid-20th century, when purpose-built stands like this were essential links between quiet neighbourhoods and the rest of Singapore. Before ride-hailing apps and phone bookings, residents would queue here for a cab into town or to connect with bus services at the foot of the hill.

Today, it stands quietly amid the lush surroundings, no longer in active use, but preserved as a physical reminder of how Singaporeans once travelled. While the taxis no longer queue here, the structure remains a quiet landmark in the estate, tucked away along the slopes of Upper Thomson.

From daily commutes to weekend trips to town, this simple concrete shelter has quietly witnessed decades of life in Sembawang Hills. Old and unused, it still holds a place in the neighbourhood’s memory.

Do you remember the old Ang Mo Kio Swimming Complex? 🏊‍♂️

Opened in 1982, it was one of the first neighbourhood swimming complexes serving residents in Ang Mo Kio so families no longer needed to travel far for a swim. Its distinctive angular roof design and red brick façade made it stand out from typical public pools, and in 1986 it even won the Singapore Institute of Architects Architectural Design Award for its thoughtful architecture

After more than 40 years of memories, the original complex closed for redevelopment. Today, the site has reopened as ActiveSG Sport Park @ Teck Ghee with upgraded pools, a gym, futsal and multi sport courts, and more inclusive spaces for all ages and abilities

From school swim lessons to weekend family outings, this place has always been part of growing up in AMK. Old or new, it continues to bring the community together through sport and play.

📍226H Kebun Baru Market & Food Centre is home to Shu Heng Bi Tai Mak 书恒美大碗

Bi tai mak has its roots in Teochew and Cantonese communities and dates back to the late 1800s to early 1900s. It began as a simple, affordable noodle made to stretch flour further, filling bellies during hard times.

When Chinese migrants arrived in Singapore in the early 20th century, bi tai mak followed. Over time, local hawkers adapted it to local tastes, serving it in comforting soups or dry style with minced meat and vegetables. What started as a humble staple slowly became a familiar hawker favourite many grew up with.

Thank you for sharing this hawker classic with us. Let’s continue to support our hawkers and keep our food stories alive ❤️

When Ang Mo Kio Community Centre first started in 1976, it had only a small space at the void deck of a block of flats before moving to its current building years later. Back then it served as a simple gathering point for residents in a growing new town, hosting grassroots activities, classes and community events.

Over the decades the centre has grown with Ang Mo Kio, evolving into a permanent hub where generations of residents have met, learned and celebrated together. This year AMK CC proudly celebrates 50 years of bringing the community together 🎉 half a century of memories, connections and shared stories.

Seen from above the centre also reveals its distinct octagon-shaped roof forms, a design feature common in early Ang Mo Kio public buildings, created to provide open, functional and welcoming spaces. These structures have quietly supported decades of community interaction and everyday life.

📍724 AMK Market & Food Centre is home to Fried Cockle Kway Teow 宏茂桥鲜蛤炒粿条

Char kway teow has humble beginnings. It started as a simple and affordable meal for labourers in the early 1900s, brought to Singapore by Teochew and Hokkien migrants. Fried over high heat with flat rice noodles, lard, eggs and dark sauce, it was meant to be filling, comforting and packed with energy for a long day’s work.

Over time, Singapore hawkers added their own touches like cockles, Chinese sausage and chilli, turning it into the smoky and flavour packed dish we love today. What began as a working man’s meal has since become one of Singapore’s most iconic hawker classics.

Thank you for sharing this delicious hawker find with us. Let’s continue to support our hawkers and keep our food heritage alive ❤️
