Safe Roads Alliance

Safe Roads Alliance Our mission is to save lives through better driving. Together, we can all help to make our streets safer for everyone.

We focus on safety tips for drivers of all ages, as well as distracted driving legislation and community programs. On February 23rd, 2020, after over a decade of advocacy, Massachusetts finally passed a Hands-Free law. This means that drivers cannot hold a cell phone or other electronic device in their hand. The penalties are the same as for the texting ban, and more details can be found here: htt

ps://www.saferoadsalliance.org/hands_free_law

In September 2010, two new safe driving laws took affect in Massachusetts.

1 - Texting While Driving is illegal for all drivers. The penalties are:

- 1st offense-$100 assessment
- 2nd offense-$250 assessment
- 3rd or subsequent offense-$500 assessment

Drivers cannot use any mobile electronic device to write, send, or read an electronic message including text messages, emails, instant messages or accessing the internet.

2 - Junior operators, those under the age of 18, are not allowed to use their phones at all, not for texting or talking. The penalties for junior operators are:

- 1st offense-180-day license suspension
- 2nd or subsequent offense within 3 years-1 year license suspension
- $500 reinstatement fee

Billie Eilish you understand. There can often be a very thin veil between those who survive a car crash, and those who don't. To anyone who cares about road safety, we have some bills we need the Massachusetts legislature to pass! Please call your rep and senator today and ask them to support SAFETY CAMERAS - S.2344 and H.3754 An Act Relative to Traffic Regulation Using Road Safety Cameras. We are asking Massachusetts to join 21 other states that allow communities to use speed and red light cameras to reduce traffic injuries and deaths. Municipal opt-in leaves the decision up to each community. Need help finding your legislator? Plug your address in here: https://malegislature.gov/Search/FindMyLegislator

Join us on November 16th for the 2025 Ride and Walk for Your Life alongside , , , , and on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

As of October 20, a total of 273 people have been killed on Massachusetts roads this year alone, including forty pedestrians and seven cyclists. These deaths are preventable, and we will not accept any loss of life on our roads.

On Sunday, November 16, we will gather to remember those we have lost and encourage our state legislators to pass legislation for automated enforcement and expanded truck safety requirements that will help prevent crashes that end in tragedy.

This year, registrants can choose to participate in either a group bike ride or a group walk before the rally portion of the event.

🚲 The bike ride, organized by BCU, will set off from Cambridge Common at 11 am and bike to the State House.

🚲 The walk, organized by WalkMassachusetts, will meet in Boston Common at 11 am before joining the rally at the State House.

🪧 The rally at the State House will begin at 12 pm and is organized by Families for Safe Streets Massachusetts with support from Sidney Mae Olson Rainbow Fund, MassBike, Cambridge Bicycle Safety, Safe Roads Alliance, Boston Cyclists Union, and WalkMassachusetts. We’re honored that State Senate President Pro Tempore Will Brownsberger, Boston City Councilor Enrique J. Pepén, Jack Corcoran, Rev. Laura Everett, Mary Beth Ellis, Eric Olson, and Sherri Arrington will be speaking.
