This is the last post of ECRN – a Creative Europe supported project - as we know it 💚

The project of the European Creative Rooftop Network will come to an end on November 15, 2024. But grief is out of place here.

At the final conference, held in Faro on the 3d and 4th of October, all participants worked on a Faro Declaration of Rooftop Activation. This declaration contains a manifesto with 12 recommendations for the future of rooftops in Europe. The manifesto will be the basis of future collaboration in a new extended legal network of ECRN, with more cities and partners involved. The Rotterdam Rooftop Days will lead this new network to an amazing rooftop future for Europe. You can read the Declaration here 👉https://ecrn.city/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Dec.FinalECRN_3.pdf

“The idea of transforming the rooftop started many years ago. Someone who was working for the real estate department of the municipality had a big dream about this rooftop. Together with his architect he came up with a crazy design for the roof. There was going to be a restaurant on the rooftop, you could walk around the roof, it was just this huge dream. But at some point he had to give up on it because he couldn’t find funding for it.” Words by Torbjörn Alström, a cultural producer at Frölunda Kulturhus in Gothenburg. He and a team of six other producers organized a range of events on the rooftop last summer. The rooftop was unused before, and he explains to us how the idea for the rooftop started.

Frölunda Kulturhus s a cultural center in a suburb of Gothenburg. It’s a location for a great variety of cultural events such as dance, theatre, cinema, workshops and exhibitions. The building also houses a swimming pool, sports halls, meeting rooms and a library. It was opened in 1980 and up until recently the rooftop was unused. The building is owned by the municipality of Gothenburg.

Near the centre of Chemnitz, you find the primary school “Südlicher Sonnenberg”. It is the first school in Chemnitz with a school yard and garden on top of the building. This is the territory of Susan Einhorn, an architect who works for the municipality of Chemnitz.de, who was the main initiator of this project.

Together with her team, she (re)develops urban buildings, especially schools and kindergartens. The project started in 2018. Susan and her team of architects and engineers were looking for a suitable location to develop a new school. They found a piece of land that seemed quite appropriate because of its position next to a park with public playgrounds and sports fields, though there was not enough space on the plot to develop a school, a two-field gym and a schoolyard. They came up with a solution: why not use the rooftop of the school as a schoolyard? On the roof there is space for teaching, gardening and playing. The idea is also to use the rooftop multifunctional for the kindergarten next to the school and to host events on it.

👻 It's almost that time of year again: Halloween. The best moment to visit this classic location: what's better for than a haunted castle? 👻

This castle was built in the 16th century, and has been a renowned landmark since then. In Schlosshotel Klaffenbach couples can get married at the wedding hall which, legend has it, is haunted by the ghost of Maiden of Taube. She rejected a marriage proposal from the Lord of Rabenstein, whereupon her angry father had her walled up alive in the castle tower.

This architectural gem with its spectacular roof structure is an ambivalent site of memory: today a popular setting for family occasions, but it used to be a correctional facility for youth during GDR times.

“I feel a great satisfaction when a green roof is implemented, like doing something to make this world a better place.”

Barcelona is a densely populated city with rising property prices, hot summers, and limited space for greenery 🌵

However, the city has 170,000 hectares of unused rooftop surface. Transforming these spaces into green areas for people makes perfect sense, according to Jaume Ferret Tintó Jaume works for ET POSEM VERDA, where he and his colleagues promote and create green rooftops in Barcelona.

Their team comprises an architect, an engineer, and a salesman, offering comprehensive support throughout the entire process of establishing a green roof. They handle technical feasibility studies, design, advice on systems such as irrigation and vegetation types, construction, and ongoing maintenance.

Experience the dynamic essence of Faro's community as we sit down with Enrique, the chairman of Ambifaro, the municipal enterprise that brings the city's market and much more to life.

Under Enrique's leadership, Ambifaro manages essential city functions such as mobility and paid parking, while also spearheading cultural and recreational events. One of their standout projects is the annual F Festival, a lively music event held every September to celebrate Faro's municipal birthday. Additionally, Ambifaro is transforming the rooftop of the municipal market into a bustling hub for local events.

The ECRN congress in Faro was a great success! 🏆

Experts and practitioners from all over Europe shared experiences and good practices and defined ways of working together in the future. The project, supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme, is coming to an end in its current form. But in Faro, ways of working together for the future were defined.

A European organisation will be born to continue to run the project. The congress produced a final declaration that encourages action and challenges public authorities and the community to the urban revolution that will transform Europe’s roofscape, making it greener, more sustainable, more community-active and culturally attractive!

ECRN 2.0? Here we go! 👏

Thank you all for joining, and thanks to all ECRN members for the past years💚

Jan Henk Tigelaar is starting a Rooftop Revolution! And that is exactly what we love to see 💪

This is interview 2 by Nomad Anne Molenaar. Anne explored case studies across all nine partner cities of ECRN, each highlighting unique rooftop projects. Her project features interviews with key individuals who played pivotal roles in developing or programming these innovative spaces within their own cities. The aim of this project is to inspire and support others in initiating their own rooftop ventures and to foster a network of rooftop developers across Europe.

Jan Henk Tigelaar is the director of Rooftop Revolution, a mission-driven organization based in Amsterdam dedicated to bringing nature back into urban spaces by transforming rooftops. Rooftop Revolution advises roof owners on the best rooftop solutions for their buildings, organizes local initiatives in various cities, and collaborates with local governments on rooftop mapping and policy formulation. His contributions have earned him the title of Rooftop Hero of the Netherlands in 2023 🦸

Yes, we have started! Day 1 of the ECRN conference 💪

The Congress is the culmination of a four-year Creative Europe project, funded by the European Union, that brings together nine European partners. With Europe's urban sustainability as its main theme, the ECRN challenges us to recognize the potential of our cities rooftops and to envision a greener future with a higher quality of life.

Here are some of the ECRN partners together on stage! They are talking about their experiences in envisioning the rooftop future. With Lola Armadàs from Terrats en Cultura, Remco from ROEF, Bruno from Município de Faro and Jak from Urban Scale Interventions.
