New Erasmus+ project helps young people make more sustainable fashion choices

Fast fashion is one of today's major environmental and social challenges. It contributes to climate change, excessive resource use, growing textile waste and unfair labour practices. While many young people are deeply concerned about sustainability, the allure of cheap prices, constant advertising and social media trends can make fast fashion hard to resist. The new Erasmus+ project Sustainable Advocates aims to address this gap between values and everyday behaviour, helping young people to better understand the real impact of their clothing choices and encouraging more responsible consumption.

“Fast fashion is designed to be quick and disposable, but its impact on people and the planet lasts much longer. Through Sustainable Advocates, we want to give young people the knowledge, digital tools, and confidence to question their habits and make more responsible choices that they can carry into both their personal and professional lives,” says a representative of WeLearn.

Coordinated by Valmiera Development Agency (Latvia), the project will run from September 2025 to November 2026, in partnership with Sustainability InnoCenter (Sweden) and WeLearn (Ireland). Together, the partners will create engaging infographics about fast fashion and its sustainable alternatives, organise a 30-day “No Fast Fashion Challenge” for young vocational education and training (VET) learners, and share their experiences via social media campaigns and digital storytelling. The project will also produce policy briefs based on its findings to help educators and decision-makers integrate sustainability and responsible consumption into VET education.

As a result of the project, young VET learners will gain greater awareness, critical thinking skills, and practical knowledge to make more sustainable fashion choices. Educators will receive ready-to-use learning resources, while policymakers and stakeholders will benefit from evidence - based recommendations. Ultimately, Sustainable Advocates aims to reduce overconsumption and textile waste, while supporting Europe’s transition towards a more sustainable and responsible fashion system.

Future Minds is an + initiative focused on co-designing new curricula for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in sustainable and . The project brings together partners from across Europe to develop innovative learning approaches and collaborative frameworks that support more inclusive and sustainable futures for tourism and transport.

Special thanks to Ioanna Pagoni and Eirini Vlassi from the University of the Aegean for the excellently coordinated meeting and for their wonderful hospitality. It was also a real pleasure to finally meet in person and connect with our other partners: Athena Tsirimpa (MobyX), Samyajit Basu (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), and Marika D'Angelo and Rita Quisillo (CESIE ETS).

The meeting was highly productive, and we agreed on several ambitious next steps for the project.

In the coming weeks, our team at Sustainability InnoCenter will focus on establishing a Learning Community of Practice in , bringing together people from academia and industry to exchange ideas, knowledge, and experiences, identify current needs in the field, and contribute valuable input to the development of university curricula. Our focus will be on community-based planning for climate-neutral tourism and transport.

If you are interested in this topic and would like to contribute to the future of education while connecting with like-minded professionals, feel free to reach out.

Last Friday, Sustainability InnoCenter, together with the partners of the Future Minds Project, hosted the ThinkLab, an inspiring online co-creation session dedicated to rethinking university education in sustainable tourism and transport. The event brought together industry experts, researchers, educators, and students to exchange ideas and collaboratively shape the future of sustainability-focused curricula.

This was a particularly important milestone for us - our first public event within the project, and we are truly grateful for the incredible interest and engagement. More than 40 participants joined the discussion, working in eight groups to explore what topics should be included in university courses on sustainable travel and tourism.

The discussions showed that sustainable tourism and transport education must evolve from theory to action. Universities need to adopt a systemic and interdisciplinary approach that integrates technical skills (data analysis, AI applications, emissions measurement), governance and ESG knowledge, inclusive and accessible design, and strong community engagement.

Participants emphasised regenerative tourism, over-tourism management, behavioural change, and the importance of aligning infrastructure, policy, and market dynamics, rather than placing responsibility solely on individual travellers.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants and facilitators who made this event so insightful and meaningful.

As a next step, we will continue working closely with stakeholders to co-design new curricula through Communities of Practice in Sweden, Greece, Belgium, and Cyprus. This collaborative process will help ensure that academic content is closely aligned with real market needs, industry expectations, and the pressing sustainability challenges facing tourism and transport today.

If you are interested in joining this initiative and contributing to meaningful impact in sustainable tourism and transport education, we would be delighted to connect and explore potential cooperation!

We can hardly believe it, but the Baltic Impact Accelerator is coming to an end. These three years have been truly inspiring, filled with meaningful collaboration, innovation, and countless opportunities to support business growth across the Central Baltic region. Together with our partners, we supported 100 startups from Sweden, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia, helping them take significant steps toward more sustainable business models.

To celebrate this journey, Sustainability InnoCenter (Sweden) hosted the final online workshop on 24 February, bringing together participants from all three cohorts. The event focused on cross-border collaboration and EU funding opportunities, with special attention to financing instruments available to startups.

We were honored to welcome outstanding experts who shared valuable insights and practical experience:
❇️ Harris Stamatopoulos, Director of Sustainability InnoCenter, who spoke about capitalising on cross-country collaborations in the EU and moderated the session
❇️ Joao Gomes, Director at MG Sustainable Engineering, who shared his company's experience with European projects, and his colleagues Juan José Contreras Keegan and Giuseppe Virga, who guided participants in navigating European public grants and Erasmus+ opportunities
❇️ Marta Kaprale, Founder of Star Dust Impact, who provided participants with hands-on advice for accessing EU funding
❇️ Kay Nag, UN & EU Expert and CEO of BothOfUs, who spoke about access to large-scale funding
❇️ Jinqin Yang, CEO of Cusp Consulting AB and Sustainability Manager at Splitivision, who highlighted sustainability from a strategic and long-term perspective and its place in international projects.

We were thrilled to hear participants share their experiences with EU funding and support.

This final session opened new opportunities for collaboration and funding. In many ways, it showed that the Baltic Impact Accelerator is not the end - it's the beginning of a new phase. The partnerships, ideas, and projects created within BIA will continue to grow through new collaborations, initiatives, and businesses.

We are deeply grateful to all startups, partners, and experts who made this journey possible. Let’s keep growing together!
