CCB - Coalition Clean Baltic

CCB - Coalition Clean Baltic CCB promotes the protection and improvement of the Baltic Sea environment and natural resources. CCB is a politically independent, non-profit association.

In Helsinki, February 1990, non-governmental environmental organizations from the countries of the Baltic Sea Region united and established Coalition Clean Baltic (CCB) in order to co-operate in activities concerning the Baltic Sea. At present, CCB unites 27 member organizations from Belarus, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Ukraine and Sweden. The CCB member

organisations combined have over half a million members in all countries around the Baltic Sea. The main goal of CCB is to promote the protection and improvement of the Baltic Sea environment and natural resources. Common denominators for the CCB network include seeking opportunities to encourage new and constructive approaches and engaging people to become part of the solution instead of part of the problem. Being an international network organization, CCB has the advantage of being able to work both at the international and national policy levels as well as with concrete field projects.

🌊🐟 herring stocks and the herring fisheries have in recent years become a central point of contention in Baltic Sea fisheries policy, while dialogue between countries and between different stakeholder groups has remained limited.

📌 The Fisheries for the Future project, funded by Ålandsbanken's Baltic Sea Project , set out to change that by bringing Finnish and Swedish fishers, environmental organisations and researchers around the same table. Together they explored the state of stocks and fishing in the region, building a clearer, shared understanding of the challenges and the different perspectives that exist across the two countries and sectors.

The organisations that took part in the workshop all agree on the need for joint dialogue and wish for the cooperation to continue. 🤝

❗️Fish populations in the Baltic are already in crisis. Without action from EU countries, they won't recover, and the Baltic marine ecosystem, along with small-scale fishers and coastal communities that depend on it will pay the price.

The issue isn't the policy. It's the implementation.

If fully implemented and enforced, the (CFP) can support the achievements of three major goals:
🐟 Healthy fish populations
🌊 A living, thriving sea
⚓ A future for coastal communities

Today marks the International Day of the Baltic Harbour Porpoise, the only whale living in the Baltic Sea! 💙

Unfortunately, the Baltic proper harbour porpoise is still critically endangered and increasing human activities in the Baltic Sea continue to threaten its survival.
For years, scientists have warned about the dire state of this unique population.

Even though the solutions towards the protection of this species are already known and actions can be immediately implemented, what is still lacking is a strong political will in the region.

In 2020, ICES advised closing static net fisheries in key harbour porpoise areas and expanding measures to avoid bycatch - the accidental capture of porpoises in fishing nets - across the entire population range.

Now, the Baltic Sea Fisheries Forum (BALTFISH) must deliver strong and ambitious Joint Recommendations that fully follow this science-based advice.

Protecting the Baltic harbour porpoise and minimizing their main threats also means protecting the future of the Baltic Sea itself. The Baltic harbour porpoise cannot wait another round of political delay. Every measure delayed brings this species one step closer to the point of no return.

CCB today responded to the European Commission’s evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), warning that reopening the law would risk years of delay while Europe’s seas, especially the Baltic, continue to deteriorate. 🐟 ⚠️

To turn the tide, we call on the EU Commission and EU Member States to close the gap between commitments and reality. This means:
✔️ Strengthening enforcement
✔️ Applying ecosystem-based fisheries management
✔️ Fully implementing existing legislative tools to rebuild fish populations, particularly in the Baltic Sea. 🌊

The evaluation confirms that the remains a relevant and comprehensive framework, and it´s time to fulfil its potential.

In a healthy Baltic Sea, sustainable fisheries and thriving seal populations can coexist. 🦭🐟During the culling season, seals are being targeted instead of addressing their full restoration.

We need solutions and actions that restore balance, not reduce biodiversity. 🌊
