🌍 From the Horn of Africa to heart of Lagos, Nigeria: Connecting Borderlands, Knowledge and Practice

The Life & Peace Institute’s Horn of Africa Regional Programme (HARP) will be at the ABORNE 2026 Conference in Lagos, Nigeria, from 24–28 August 2026.

As Africa continues to navigate increasingly interconnected borderlands, there is a growing need to bridge research, policy and practice and ensure that the voices and experiences of borderland communities on the continent inform regional responses.

At ABORNE 2026, HARP will share insights from its work over the years advancing secure and prosperous borderlands in the Horn of Africa, while also learning from borderlands researchers, practitioners and policymakers from different regions in Africa.

🤝 Diverse regions, shared challenges, shared learning, shared responsibilities.

HARP will connect with other practitioners and academia in Lagos and contribute practical conversations on how Africa can build more connected, peaceful, resilient and prosperous borderlands.

The Mobility & Movement – Cross-Border Resilience (M&M) Project commemorated International Youth Day 2026 across Moyale, Sololo and Dukana in Kenya, and the Forolle–Magado cross-border corridor, bringing together youth, government actors, CSOs, peace structures and communities.
Through dialogues, environmental action and Sports for Peace, young people reflected on shared challenges, including unemployment, substance use, political manipulation and limited participation in decision-making, while reinforcing their role as peacebuilders and agents of positive change.
In Forolle–Magado, youth from Kenya and Ethiopia demonstrated the spirit of peaceful coexistence through dialogue and a friendship football match attended by over 1,000 community members.
Despite different contexts, the message was shared: young people have common aspirations for peace, opportunity, inclusion and a better future.

Sowing the Seeds of Peace in Ethiopia

LPI’s Ethiopia team brought together partners in Addis Ababa for a two-day Progress Review, Reflection & Outcome Harvesting Workshop. Together, we discussed progress, achievements, and lessons learned; reflected on the positive changes taking shape in communities through this partnership; explored the changes our partners are bringing to communities; exchanged experiences and good practices across different regions; agreed on priorities and next steps for the coming quarter. The insights gained will guide our next steps – strengthening collaboration and deepening our peacebuilding impact across Ethiopia.

From theory to practice

Representatives including IGAD Member States and Life & Peace Institute borderland partners, visited the Moyale One Stop Border Post (OSBP) to learn firsthand about how it operates. The delegation then paid a courtesy call to the Sololo Deputy County Commissioner – Edward Goko, to introduce the group and hear directly from Sololo communities about their lived realities. They heard from representatives of the: Border Peace Committee, Water Resource Committee, and the Environmental & Conservation Committee. The visit also included stops at a key water point in Sololo and the Dampala Fachana Mega Dam, currently under construction by KFS in partnership with Sololo County Government. The delegation was joined by IGAD's Representative to the UN – H.E. Ambassador Cherinet Hariffo.

At the end of July, the Association of Ethiopian Historians (AEH) and the Life & Peace Institute jointly convened a National Conference in Addis Ababa under the theme: “Extricating Ethiopia from its History of Political Violence.”
The conference brought together historians, political scientists, anthropologists, peacebuilding practitioners, and policymakers to reflect on Ethiopia’s long history of political violence and explore pathways toward a more peaceful and inclusive future.
The discussions generated historically grounded insights and policy-relevant recommendations that can contribute to Ethiopia’s ongoing National Dialogue, Transitional Justice processes, and broader peacebuilding efforts.
A synthesis report highlighting key findings and recommendations will be developed, and selected papers from the conference will be considered for publication.
