UDF and Leoparden would like to invite you to a quiz night! The theme for the night will be Swedish civil society and development aid.🌿
NGOs are independent organisations that operate without government control and are typically driven by a particular social, environmental, or humanitarian mission. They can vary widely in size, focus, and scope of activities. NGOs often work on issues such as human rights, poverty alleviation, environmental conservation, healthcare, education, and disaster relief. They play a crucial role in advocating for marginalised communities, promoting social justice, and providing assistance where government resources may be lacking. NGOs are funded through donations, grants, and government contracts, and they rely heavily on volunteer support as well.
On the 15th of March this year, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) - a government agency - announced that they would denounce their contract with 20 or so Swedish civil society partners (NGOs). Because these partners channel aid to organisations in other countries, this decision will impact most 2000 organisations worldwide. Sida will be revaluating Sweden’s NGO system as a whole. Among other things, Sida is investigating the possibility of them solely mounting the role and workload of their previous partners, thereby centralising and controlling where the money goes (Concord). For example, this year the government released a reform agenda for Swedish aid reflecting a shift in focus and strategies. The government’s motivation for its new direction on developmental aid is mainly efficiency, transparency and long-term (Regeringskansliet). Interestingly, prior to these changes, Sweden was rated on top in terms of targeting actual needs and contributing to addressing problems needing global cooperation with its development aid (Principled Aid Index). Hence, the government’s radical changes to how Swedish aid is done have raised many questions and debates.
