The UK is currently experiencing its hottest April on record, with drought fears mounting. According to the UK's Meteorological Office (Met Office), temperatures have been well above average for this time of year, and some areas have not seen rainfall in over a month. The hot and dry weather is putting pressure on agriculture, as crops and livestock are struggling to cope with the heat. There are also concerns about the impact on the environment, with wildfires becoming an increasingly serious risk. Conservation groups are urging the public to take steps to reduce water usage and prevent fires.

The recent flooding in California is just a preview of what's to come, with exponentially worse flooding predicted in the future. With atmospheric rivers dumping heavy moisture on the land, we're seeing issues like flooding, landslides, and power outages. Daniel Swain, a climate scientist in the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a fellow at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, calls it a “loaded spring” that could yet flood a substantial portion of the valley.
Climate scientists warn that what was once considered unlikely to happen in our lifetimes "has become quite likely." The Pajaro levee failure forced more than 3,000 residents to flee, and with aging levees and a damper future ahead, some residents are questioning whether this part of California is a viable place to call home. Let's take the necessary steps to prepare for the worst-case scenario and protect our communities.

Ethiopia – 240,000 Impacted by Heavy Rains and Floods, 29 Dead, Says United Nations.
Rains were erratic and out of season and caused flash floods given the weakness of the soil.
According to a recent report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) the onset of the Belg and Gu rains have caused loss of life and damage to shelters, agriculture, livestock and infrastructure in the Afar, Oromia and Somali Regions. Increasing levels of the Omo River threaten to flood areas of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ (SNNP) Region. Many of those affected are in IDP (internally displaced persons) camps, displaced by long-term drought in the country.
Images provided by the United Nations Satellite Centre - Unosat showed flooding along the Shabelle River in Shabelle District. As of 28 March 2023, as much as 485 km2 of land was under water, with an estimated 40,000 people exposed to floodwaters.

After attending the , the delegation of PWCDF - People's World Commission on Drought and Flood visit Owens Lake, and Pyramid Lake, to discuss the impact of human activities on water bodies.
Human activities such as water diversions and climate change have had significant impacts on and . Water diversions from the Truckee River have caused a decline in water levels in Pyramid Lake, affecting its unique ecosystem and threatening the survival of its native species.
Owens Lake, on the other hand, was drained in the early 20th century for agricultural purposes, resulting in harmful dust storms due to the exposed lake bed. Climate change exacerbates these issues, leading to increased water scarcity and rising temperatures, which further threaten the delicate balance of these ecosystems.

💧🌍 Water affects everything - from health and hunger to gender equality and peace. But dysfunction throughout the water cycle is holding us back. On , the People’s World Commission on Drought and Flood has taken the “World Pledge to Rejuvenate the Water-Cycle” which says –
I am water. I stand before you as water. Together, we advocate a healthy water cycle. Our support is for the kinship of people and water. Through water, we connect:
PERSON: Every one of us carries water in our bodies;
PROCESS: Every community comes together and can flourish with and around water;
PLANET: Water gives life and balance to this Earth: one Planet— one Water.
It is within our lifetime that the water cycle has been broken. Our solution is Rejuvenation.
Rejuvenating the water cycle requires a paradigm shift that goes beyond a human-centric worldview. Let's communitize and work together to protect every water body as a unique and biodiverse ecosystem. Our commitment to present and future generations should prioritize broad and fair ecological values, and acknowledge the equitable rights of all living beings to free-flowing water. Join us in organized action for water rejuvenation.
