Sir Arthur Lewis originally wanted to be an engineer but as a young man in Saint Lucia, a British colony, in the 1930s he was not able to because of the colour of his skin.

Instead, Lewis went on to study economics. He was particularly interested in the problems of developing countries and in 1979 was awarded the prize in economic sciences for pioneering research in this area.

“It was impossible to feel oneself an exceptional stranger in a place where there were so many strangers. It was a city of immigrants; everybody was in some sense displaced. But everybody was also in a sense enthusiastic, full of enterprise, full of a wonderful gayety, a feeling of opportunity, freedom, liberation from old ties.”

Literature laureate Saul Bellow spoke of growing up in his home town of Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Born on this day in 1915, Bellow is considered one of the innovators of the American novel. He based his books on people in their environment. And every now and then, Chicago served as a backdrop for his stories.

Saul Bellow was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 50 years ago "for the human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture that are combined in his work.”

On this day in 1843 a pioneering peace activist was born: Bertha von Suttner. She was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (in fact, she's credited as the inspiration behind the very creation of the prize) and became the second female Nobel Prize laureate after Marie Skłodowska Curie.

Von Suttner is recognised as one of the leaders of the international peace movement of her time. Her influential anti-war novel 'Lay Down Your Arms' (1889) was provocative to many, but the anti-militaristic message caught on. At male-dominated peace congresses she stood out as a liberal and forceful leader. She was referred to as the "generalissimo of the peace movement."

She became a close friend of Alfred Nobel's in the 1870s, and they corresponded for years on the subject of peace. There is little doubt that von Suttner's friendship with Nobel had an impact on the contents of his will, and many give her the credit for his establishment of a peace prize. It is said that the letter written by Alfred to Bertha in January 1893 was the first time Alfred introduced the idea of a peace prize.

"Inform me, convince me, and then I will do something great for the movement," Alfred Nobel said to Bertha von Suttner.

Nobel Prize laureate Abdus Salam founded the ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics) in 1964 to provide scientists from developing countries with the training and education to develop their careers. When it was set up in the midst of the Cold War it served as an important bridge between East and West.

Salam was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 1979 for his contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particle – he used the prize money to benefit physicists in developing countries.

Have you read Ernest Hemingway's short novel 'The Old Man and the Sea'?

Among Hemingway's later works, the most outstanding is this short novel from 1952. It is the story of an old fisherman’s journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat.

Hemingway was awarded the 1954 literature prize "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style."

Today would have been the 110th birthday of Francis Crick, who along with James Watson, made a ground-breaking step in genetic research in 1953, when they managed to determine the structure of the DNA molecule.

This molecule consists of a long line of building blocks that form a double helix. Its building blocks are of four kinds, and their sequence serves as a code for genetic information.

This discovery was enabled by research by Rosalind Franklin, who died in 1958. The 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Crick, Watson and Maurice Wilkins, a colleague of Rosalind Franklin.
