Today would have been the 110th birthday of Francis Crick, who along with James Watson, made a ground-breaking step in genetic research in 1953, when they managed to determine the structure of the DNA molecule.
This molecule consists of a long line of building blocks that form a double helix. Its building blocks are of four kinds, and their sequence serves as a code for genetic information.
This discovery was enabled by research by Rosalind Franklin, who died in 1958. The 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Crick, Watson and Maurice Wilkins, a colleague of Rosalind Franklin.
