During , we raise awareness about gender-based violence, challenge discriminatory norms and call for better laws and services to put an end to violence against women.
📱 This year, together with thousands of organisations from all over the world, we are focusing on digital gender-based violence. It is a form of violence without borders, where perpetrators can attack anytime from a safe distance behind the screen. Digital violence includes online harassment, monitoring and surveillance of someone’s phone, doxing, coordinated online hate campaigns, AI creation of sexual images and deep fake videos, revenge p**n, sending unwanted sexual pictures, etc. The violence forces important voices into silence.
It is severe. It is real. But change is possible!
✅ Politicians can pass and enforce laws that criminalize digital violence and strengthen tech sector accountability. Tech companies can ensure platform safety, remove harmful content, enforce codes of conduct and publish transparent reports. Moreover, together we can all speak up against violent and destructive behaviour.
✊🏽 Diakonia collaborates with organisations that prevent, educate and report on digital violence. Two examples are مؤسسة ادراك للتنمية والمساواة Edraak Foundation for Development & Equality in Egypt and TEDIC in Paraguay, who challenge destructive norms and work for more modern legislations which includes digital violence.
Together we can stop digital violence.
