Mucha’s 1897 depiction of Autumn from The Seasons series offers a joyful interpretation of the season. 🍎🍂

Autumn appears as a playful figure in a white gown, with red leaves woven through her long, dark hair. She offers the viewer an armful of harvest fruits, including grapes, while an abundant grapevine adorns the golden frame.

Alphonse Mucha created Poetry as part of his 1898 series, The Arts.

Produced at the height of his fame, Alphonse Mucha discarded traditional attributes such as musical instruments, paintbrushes and quills. Instead he emphasised the creative inspiration of natural beauty by giving each of the arts a circular backdrop featuring a motif from nature indicating a particular time of day. For Poetry, he chose the evening star shining in the sky at dusk.

In 1929, the Gothic reconstruction of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague was completed, coinciding with the Millennium Jubilee of St. Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia and the Czech patron saint.

Two years later, in 1931, Alphonse Mucha’s stained glass window was installed in the north nave. At its centre, the young St. Wenceslas stands with his grandmother, St. Ludmila, surrounded by scenes from the lives of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who brought Christianity to the Slavic peoples.

Below Christ, the figure of Slavia appears as a symbol of the Slavic nations and as the emblem of Slavia Bank, which funded the window.

Alphonse Mucha’s Ruby (1900), from his Precious Stones series, conveys a sense of boldness and passion.

The figure strikes a provocative pose, her hand playfully resting on an ornate ruby necklace. Red, the traditional symbol of love and passion, dominates the composition. It appears not only in the flowers and the gown but also in the jewelry, the hair, and even Ruby’s eyes.

Alphonse Mucha was a master of selling dreams rather than merely products.

His 1902 poster for the British firm Cycles Perfecta is a case in point. Rather than focusing on the bicycle itself, Mucha evokes the freedom and exhilaration of riding one. The stylised golden hair, a hallmark of his female figures, sweeps across the entire composition and lends it a sense of movement.

Can you recognise this piece from Mucha’s Precious Stones series (1900) by its colour alone?

Emerald is portrayed as a mysterious and slightly menacing gemstone. The dominant green palette is complemented by touches of orange in the intricate circular motif behind the woman’s head. The armchair, with an animal head carved into its armrest, was inspired by a piece of furniture Mucha himself owned.

Have you seen the preparatory sketch for Alphonse Mucha’s Ch*****ne Ruinart poster (1896)?

Executed in pencil, watercolor, and gold leaf on paper, the drawing gives shape to the composition of the finished lithograph. The central figure’s abundant golden hair dominates much of the design, complemented by her elegant gown. In her free hand she holds a glass of ch*****ne, a gesture that conveys both refinement and prestige.

The poster was among Mucha’s earliest commissions from the printer F. Champenois and was exhibited at the landmark Exposition d’Affiches Artistiques Françaises & Étrangères, Modernes & Rétrospectives, held in Reims in November 1896.

Alphonse Mucha drew inspiration from a wide range of cultural sources.

As its title suggests, this pair of decorative panels, Byzantine Heads (1897), reflects the influence of Byzantine art. Both women are depicted in profile against an ornate background of vegetal arabesques. Richly detailed jewellery adorns their hair, enhancing the elaborate composition.

Yet traces of Mucha’s own heritage are also evident in these works. The patterns surrounding the circular frames, in particular, evoke the lacework characteristic of traditional Moravian craft.

The first day of October is here.

In his series of medallions titled The Months (1899), Alphonse Mucha personified October as a young woman in a flowing gown, her gaze cast gently to the side. She sits in a forest, and the scene conveys a quiet, peaceful stillness. What's particularly interesting is the preliminary sketch, where the woman is shown cradling a small deer — a tender detail that didn't make it into the final version.

Orange and green hues adorn Mucha’s Topaz (1900), part of his Precious Stones series.

Honesty plant fills the lower half of the composition — a nod to Japanese prints. A decorative frame encircles the woman’s head, echoing the swirling orange, blue, and green tones of the sky at its center. Did you notice the head against which she rests her elbow?
