Our Alphonse Mucha: The Artist as Visionary exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tainan opens tomorrow!

Both teams have been working tirelessly to bring this exhibition to life, and we cannot wait to share it with you. The exhibition guides visitors through six curated themes: Mucha’s early career as a Bohemian in Paris, the rise of Le Style Mucha, the 1900 Paris World Exposition, Mucha’s spiritual and philosophical pursuits, his patriotism and The Slav Epic, and philosophy and humanitarianism reflected in his later works.

Today, we present another sketch-to-final-work comparison.

This week, we turn our attention to Mucha’s Poetry (1898), from The Arts series. Poetry is personified by a female figure gazing contemplatively at a moonlit countryside, framed by a laurel branch — a traditional symbol of divination and poetic inspiration. In the final lithograph, the figure of Poetry is rendered in an ornate, elaborately detailed bodice that is not captured in such detail in the initial sketch.

Summer is officially upon us — and what better way to mark the occasion than with Mucha's 1896 Summer, from his celebrated The Seasons series.

In this iteration, Mucha portrays Summer as a sensual and sultry brunette adorned with red poppies in her hair. A mood of quiet contentment pervades the composition, as the figure reclines gracefully against a grapevine, her feet resting in the shallow water below. Above, Mucha renders the warmth of the season through a luminous, delicate blue sky suffused with summer light.

How lovely are the colors in Mucha’s 1900 version of Spring?

The more vivid apricot tones at the bottom of the artwork diffuse seamlessly into a softer peach shade towards the top. Red, yellow, and orange tones adorn the flowers in the woman’s hands. The whole composition is tied together with a beautiful lime green in the figure’s dress and border of the artwork.

Staying on the theme of patriotic symbolism, we turn to Mucha’s poster for the 10th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Czechoslovakia (1928).

In this poster, Mucha depicted the nation as a young woman in ceremonial robes, her headdress adorned with the emblems of the ethnic regions constituting Czechoslovakia: Bohemia (the lion), Moravia (the chequered eagle), Slovakia (the cross), Silesia (the eagle with the clover stalk), and Ruthenia (the bear). She is being crowned with a garland of flowers by an ethereal figure behind her, representing the Allies in World War I whose support proved instrumental in securing the nation’s independence.

Mucha created this poster for the 6th Sokol Festival in 1912 as a quiet but powerful act of resistance.

Under Habsburg rule, Czechs were prohibited from organizing politically, compelling patriotic sentiment to be channeled through seemingly harmless outlets. The Sokol gymnastic association — meaning “falcon” in Czech — outwardly offered athletic training for young people and hosted national sporting competitions. Its true purpose, however, was deeply political: to cultivate a nationalist spirit and resist Germanisation. In producing posters for the organisation, Mucha openly aligned himself with its patriotic cause.

What is a painting, if not a vision brought to life on canvas?

In this work, Mucha sought to personify The Arts through his characteristic decorative style. The allegory of Painting (1898) is depicted as a young woman with golden locks, her right hand extended to present a red flower — a symbol of nature as a boundless source of inspiration and admiration for the artist.

This reverence for the natural world is further reflected throughout the composition: in the ornate floral motifs adorning the upper corners, and in the delicate peach tones that suffuse the lower portion of the image. Circular rainbow arcs mirror the round decorative border upon which the figure appears to be seated, lending the composition a sense of harmony and unity.

Like Zodiac, this lithograph was originally created as the 1898 Champenois company calendar, though its immediate popularity prompted swift republication by La Plume magazine as a decorative panel titled Reverie.

Mucha’s composition features a dreamy young woman leafing through a book of decorative designs — possibly printers’ samples — set against an elaborate floral disk of intertwining stems and blossoms.

Today we celebrate World Art Nouveau Day. 🌿

Often regarded as the first truly self-conscious attempt to forge a modern visual language, Art Nouveau swept through the arts from the early 1890s until the First World War — decorative, sensual, and utterly uncompromising in its beauty.

Rooted in the natural world, the movement gave us some of the most captivating imagery ever committed to canvas and print: delicate tendrils, fluid organic forms, swooping lines, eccentric geometry, and figures of an almost otherworldly elegance.

Alphonse Mucha embodied these ideals completely. His iconic poster designs didn’t merely reflect the Art Nouveau style — they helped define it. Through his luminous women, intricate botanical borders, and signature harmony of line and ornament, Mucha elevated commercial art to something transcendent, and in doing so, gave the movement much of its enduring visual identity.

Every great artwork begins with a single sketch.

In this early study, we can trace the foundations of Mucha’s iconic poster Monaco – Monte Carlo (1897), produced for P.L.M. railway services. At the heart of the composition, a woman lifts both hands to her face, her expression caught between wonder and wish. Encircling her, the delicate outlines of a floral pattern of lilac, hydrangea, dianthus and violet begin to emerge, while a distant mountain range lingers softly in the background.

How much of the magic of a finished work is already present in its very first lines?
