Reflections from Life after the PhD: career opportunities in brain data science
Our Professional Development Workshop at SfN 2025 brought together a room full of early-career neuroscientists eager to explore what their futures could look like beyond academia. The session highlighted how skills in neuroscience, data analysis, and critical thinking open doors to exciting roles across industry, technology, foundations, and policy.
A big thank you to our panelists for sharing their journeys and insights:
• Dimitri Yatsenko, PhD, DataJoint
• Uma Karmarkar, PhD, University of California San Diego
• Mathew Abrams, PhD, MPH, International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility (INCF)
• Stephanie Albin, PhD, Kavli Foundation
The discussion touched on career transitions, emerging opportunities in brain data science, and how to navigate work life balance in fast-evolving fields. The energy in the room made it clear that the next generation of researchers is ready to take bold, interdisciplinary steps.
