‘Couchsurfer’s Paradise’
'Couchsurfer's Paradise' initiated by curator Sheena Malone, is an exhibition unfolding in four episodes taking place in the homes of strangers. In ‘Couchsurfer’s Paradise’ the home becomes a temporary art-space, providing temporary shelter for the sojourning artist, curator, art and audience. In this manner, the residence’s function is transformed to that of a peripateti
c kunsthalle which offers a platform for discussion and discovery through engagement with art and diverse audiences. The project broadens the scope of the exhibition space beyond that of the white cube by bringing art from the public realm to into private space. Engaging with the home, interventions are situated alongside the personal effects of the resident, creating a wunderkammer of objects unique to the abode. The art acts as a guest in the home causing minimal disturbance alongside the permanent rather than brashly imposing itself within the space.
‘Couchsurfer's Paradise’ looks to the urban and suburban home as a space for contemporary art in its many forms as spaces to accommodate diverse artistic practices ranging from traditional artistic media to film, installation and performance. Previously reserved for churches and grand palazzos, domestic interiors became spaces for art collections during the Dutch Golden Age when a wealthy middle-class had their appetites whetted for small-scale cabinet paintings to decorate ordinary homes. Additionally ‘Couchsurfer’s Paradise’ draws upon the idea of the Italian salon as an important place for the exchange of ideas, a gathering of people in one location held partly to entertain and partly for knowledge production. Each episode of ‘Couchsurfer’s Paradise’ explores a difference topic relating to home and society with the exhibition by its very nature addressing larger topics beyond its possible scope. Due to the nature of the exhibitions, attendance is strictly limited. To reserve a place or to find out more information about the project please send an email to:
