Nuclear power remains a costly gamble in 2026. In a recent webinar on nuclear energy, representatives of Green parties from Finland, Germany, France, and the Western Balkans shared their experiences and knowledge.

💶⏳🥀⛓️ While it can work under specific conditions, most Green parties agree, nuclear power often means:
• High hidden costs and subsidies
• Decades of construction time
• Diverting finances from renewables
• A power source that is vulnerable to climate change
• Geopolitical dependencies for decades
🌱 While also facing its own problems, renewables currently outperform new nuclear projects in terms of construction time, geopolitical risks, and hidden costs. In Serbia 🇷🇸, where the country isn't ready politically, legally, technically, or economically, nuclear power risks becoming a distraction from the real transition to a carbon-neutral energy sector.

💡 This webinar series continues: We are pleased to invite you to the webinar "From coal to what? Just transition in the Western Balkans". The webinar brings together voices from civil society, trade unions, green political parties, and activists to discuss a just green transition and its implications in the Western Balkans. The webinar will take place on Monday, 11 May from 6pm to 8pm via Zoom. Register here to receive your link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/pLc4aR8GmJ

🌿 Climate action is not just about finances!

COP30 took place in the middle of the rainforest. But the agenda was dominated by finances and technical mechanisms.

Dr. Ludovic Garattini explores what it would take to change this pattern. He argues that real climate action means rethinking our relationship with the natural world – not just scaling up financial mechanisms.

P.S. What better day to reflect on this than Earth Day? 🌍

Even at the edge of the Amazon, COP30 approached nature primarily through a market lens. Changing the location did not change the underlying logic.

🌍 Setting the course for a greener 2026!

This past weekend, the Balkan Green Policy Lab Coordination Group met in Podgorica for a two-day working meeting — setting the plans for the year ahead.

Building on the completion of five policy papers in 2025 — on nuclear energy, energy efficiency, renewable energy transition, CBAM, and just transition — the focus now shifts to strengthening outreach, implementation, and regional dialogue around these policies in 2026.

✨ Coming up in 2026:
• 5 policy-focused webinars for party leadership and members
• 3 regional seminars to strengthen dialogue and cross-border collaboration

Through joint policy development, strategic communication, and regional cooperation, the Balkan Green Policy Lab supports Green parties to advance a credible, socially just, and forward-looking Green agenda in the region. 🌿

The project brings together Green political actors from across the Western Balkans, including Hoćemo, United Reform Action (URA), Democratic Renewal of Macedonia (DOM), Zeleno–levi front (ZLF), and Za-Orah.

👉 Follow the project — policy paper summaries launching on our website soon.

As 2025 comes to an end, we pause to reflect – not only on the challenges we face, but on the people and movements working every day to meet them. The year has been marked by conflict, democratic backsliding, climate urgency, and shrinking civic space. Yet it has also been shaped by courage, care, and collective action.

Throughout the year, we have been reminded that democracy and green transformation are not abstract ideas – they are built in practice, through participation, organising, dialogue, and long-term commitment. Together with our partners and networks, we have worked across regions to strengthen political participation, support youth leadership, foster intergenerational exchange, and enable cooperation beyond borders – even in challenging contexts.

We are deeply grateful to all our partners, colleagues, and communities for your trust, engagement, and persistence. As we move into a new year, we remain committed to advancing greener, more democratic, and more just societies – together. 🌱✊🏽

Wishing you a restful holiday season, and strength for the year ahead.

Meet Shalom Yeta! ✨ A participant from the 2024 PYPA Academy (Cohort 6), who, just a few days into last year’s program, shared that PYPA had already given her practical tools, from campaigning and public speaking to setting SMART goals, and the confidence to take these lessons back to her community.

This Sunday, we begin the 2025 PYPA Program Cohort 7. We look forward to bringing together young people from political parties in Zambia and Malawi for two weeks of learning, dialogue, and exchange on democracy, gender equality, political ideologies, youth leadership, human rights, and more. 🌍🤝

Young people are leading change today, and we’re proud to support their journey! ✨

Follow us and our partner, the Center for Young Leaders in Africa-Zambia, to stay connected as this year’s academy unfolds. 🌿

🌍🙌 How to win elections as a party?

👉 Last weekend, several hundred politicians of the Miljöpartiet gathered in for their bi-annual . The party is getting ready for the in 2026. Green Forum attended with representatives from five of our partner organisations in and .

🤝 The congress was a place for learning and exchange – in sessions on different green and societal issues, and in direct meetings between our guests and politicians from the Swedish Greens. Knowledge and experiences were flowing in both directions; there is so much to learn from each other!

💫 A special highlight at the congress: The international mingle. We converted the third floor of the congress centre into a opportunity for our partners and other participants of the congress.

👉 We continued with two study days in Stockholm. Frank Sheridan led a workshop with our partners to reflect and plan on the learnings. Later, we discussed local green work with Lars Strömgren, Magnus Runsten and Lisa Carlbom in Stockholm's City Hall. And we concluded with a discussion of energy, diversity and inclusion at our parliament visit with Linus Lakso, Cindy Falquet Lindh and Roxanne Mårback.

🫵💪 To come back to the starting question: Greens cannot win elections when focusing only on environmental issues, let’s think bigger about the future! 💚

Standing up for Democracy, Together! 🌿 Last week, we gathered with partners, academia, and politicians from around the world to ask one crucial question:
👉 How do we push back the threats to democracy?

Over two fruitful days in Stockholm, the Political Party Peer Network (PPPN) brought together voices from different political families, united by one shared belief: democracy is worth defending. ✊🏼💚

We listened to reflections on how disinformation, authoritarianism, and shrinking civic space threaten democratic systems, but also to stories of courage and solidarity. We especially appreciated hearing Samuel Ross, from the Green Party’s Youth Wing, speak about the importance of youth participation and inclusive politics. 🌍✨

Green Forum recognises the importance of continuing to promote dialogue, understanding, and collaboration across party lines. Because democracy is not just a system; it’s something we build together.

And, as was aptly stated during the conference: “Democracy is daily work – if we don’t nurture it, it falls apart!”

Happening today!

We’re joining partners and colleagues at the conference “How to Push Back the Threats to Democracy” in Stockholm, bringing together voices from academia, politics, and civil society to strengthen democracy together. 🤝🌍

In just a few days, we kick off the international conference “How to Push Back the Threats to Democracy” in Stockholm – and we are officially FULLY BOOKED! 🎉

More than 100 participants will come together to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and develop strategies to counter the global democratic backsliding we are facing today.

Bringing together voices from academia, politics, and civil society, this conference aims to create a truly cross-sector dialogue – because defending democracy requires all perspectives and the best ideas.

The conference is the result of a cooperation across ideologies and party lines, thank you to our co-organizers Olof Palmes Internationella Center, Christian Democratic International Center - KIC, Green Forum and Centerpartiets Internationella Stiftelse.
