During this time of joy,
I wanted to extend my sincerest congratulations to all of you.
To those of you with a joyous family eagerly awaiting your arrival outside, and a celebration waiting for you at home, truly, congratulations. You deserve all the love and appreciation coming your way after all the hard work you have put in during these past few years. Embrace it fully and wholeheartedly.
However, to those who cannot relate to that experience – to the students with complicated or dysfunctional home lives, to those who’ve had to be their own parent, to those with parents fighting addiction, depression, illness, conflict or sadness, to those
who stay back late after school because it may be their only place of peace, and to those whose families may not be able to celebrate them outwardly despite their undeniable love – I want you to know that I’m proud of you.
I’m proud of you for showing up and for choosing yourself despite all else. It can be difficult to fully relish in your accomplishments when you’re carrying personal burdens, especially with the uncertainty of what lies ahead. It may seem as though you are alone, but you’re not. I was in a similar position last year, attending one mottagning after another as a supportive friend. I understand the feeling, the grief and the fear. It is going to be okay.
I want you to run out and celebrate just as much as everyone else. Your growth, perseverance and resilience are invaluable, and your achievements deserve to be recognised. You have the capacity to choose your own path.
Love, Lara
