🛫 Aviation drives 2–3% of global CO₂ emissions and remains one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is widely seen as the single biggest lever available, with the potential to deliver 65–80% of the sector's CO₂ reductions by 2050.

🔎 The challenge? SAF currently makes up less than 0.5% of global jet fuel demand. Scaling from ~1 million tonnes today to the 300–400 million tonnes needed annually by 2050 will require rapid, coordinated action on policy, finance, and feedstocks, especially across fast-growing markets like Asia-Pacific.

To support that shift, the World Bioenergy Association (WBA), in collaboration with the ASAFA Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Association, has published a new factsheet covering:

✅ Production pathways: HEFA, Fischer-Tropsch, Alcohol-to-Jet & Power-to-Liquid e-fuels
✅ Environmental benefits & lifecycle GHG savings
✅ Policy landscape across the EU, US, UK, Japan & Asia-Pacific (Singapore, South Korea, Australia, China), including ASAFA's 2030 regional targets
✅ Techno-economic outlook: costs, capital needs & the investment gap
✅ Emerging technologies: Methanol-to-Jet, next-gen Power-to-Liquid & novel feedstocks

Authored by Gabriel Ho, CSO at ASAFA, the factsheet brings Asia-Pacific market insights and industry survey data to a global audience, building the shared understanding needed to close the gap between today's SAF supply and net-zero aviation.

🌱 With just four years remaining until 2030, progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals continues to fall short: only around 17% of targets are currently on track. Bioenergy holds real potential to help close that gap, contributing to clean energy access, rural livelihoods, climate action, sustainable agriculture, and waste management.

The World Bioenergy Association has launched a blog series highlighting real-world case studies that demonstrate how bioenergy is advancing the SDGs in practice. We invite you to contribute.

If your organisation is delivering a project where bioenergy is creating measurable impact, whether through expanding clean cooking access, powering communities, reducing emissions, or strengthening local economies, we would welcome the opportunity to feature your work.

📝 How to contribute:
Submit a short write-up (max. 500 words) outlining your project, its connection to the SDGs, and the role bioenergy plays. Supporting photos and links are welcome.

📩 Submissions: [email protected]

Selected case studies will be featured regularly on the WBA website and communication platforms. Join us in making the connection between bioenergy and sustainable development tangible, visible, and actionable. 🌍

🗣️ We're pleased to announce that Sylvain Verdier, Renewable Fuels Advisor at Topsoe, will be joining us as a speaker for our upcoming webinar: "Ready or Not: How the World is Preparing for CORSIA with SAF Targets."

✈️ With CORSIA's mandatory phase set to begin in 2027, the industry faces a narrowing window to close the gap between current SAF supply and future compliance needs.

🔎 Sylvain will examine what's driving (or limiting) the pace at which SAF production can scale to meet emerging targets and CORSIA deadlines, offering a grounded perspective on the technical realities behind the industry's growth trajectory.

🔥 In Rwanda, biomass remains central to everyday life: 93% of the population relies on it for cooking, primarily in the form of firewood and charcoal.
However, rising charcoal prices, pressure on forests and the health and climate impacts of traditional cooking practices reinforce the need for cleaner, more efficient and affordable alternatives.

Newly elected WBA Board member Claudia Muench sees considerable potential for locally produced pellets to support Rwanda’s transition away from traditional firewood and charcoal. Through BioMassters, she is currently helping pilot the conversion of school kitchens from firewood to pellet cooking, with encouraging early results.

The opportunity is particularly significant in schools. Almost all schools in Rwanda still rely on firewood for cooking, accounting for approximately 40% of the country’s annual firewood consumption.

By combining locally produced pellet fuel with efficient biomass stoves, Rwanda can advance several priorities simultaneously: reducing pressure on forests, lowering emissions and exposure to harmful smoke, and making daily cooking more affordable.

💬 “The opportunity for bioenergy—especially for household and institutional cooking—is significant.”

We look forward to the insight Claudia will bring to WBA’s work on clean cooking, innovation and the development of modern bioenergy markets.

♻️ Modern bioenergy in Uganda is not only a future opportunity, it is already taking shape.

As of 2025, over 50 companies are producing briquettes in the country, and in 2023, 248 Ktoe of energy was consumed in the form of pellets and briquettes, 80% for households, and 20% for commercial and public services.

Bioethanol, biogas, pellets, and briquettes can support cleaner cooking, industrial heat, electricity generation, and lower dependence on imported fossil fuels. Scaling these solutions will require investment, reliable supply chains, consumer awareness, and coordinated policy implementation.
