🌱 The World Bioenergy Association is supporting IBBC 2026, the International Conference on Bioenergy & Bioeconomy, held 28–30 October 2026 at the University of Seville, Spain.

Following the inaugural 2025 edition in Lisbon, the second edition deepens the focus on commercialisation, first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects and market deployment of sustainable bio-based solutions, with particular emphasis on integrating sustainable biomass and advanced biorefineries with energy systems, hydrogen, Power-to-X and regional development strategies. The program brings together academia, industry and policy across three days of plenaries, parallel technical tracks and industry sessions.

🌐 The current energy crisis illustrates how a high dependence on a fossil economy is not only damaging the climate but also contributing to a deepening inequality and a lacking security for food, fertilizers, materials, and energy.

Biofuels are among the key mechanisms to provide the “glue” that binds together different applications, sectors and systems in advancing a
sustainable bioeconomy.

This session aims to foster dialogue on investment, sustainability governance, and practical pathways for accelerating the transition to biofuels in the context of the Sustainability, Availability, Scalability (S.A.S) framework.

⛰️ In mid-September, our Project Officer Alejandra Leon Lavandera travelled to Linz, Austria, to attend the International Training Seminar on Sustainable Bioenergy Heating, organized by the Energy Academy of the OÖ Energiesparverband, the regional energy agency of Upper Austria.

🌱 Over four days, alongside 15 participants from 10 countries, the program covered the sustainability of bioenergy, market development, and technology for small- and mid-scale heating with wood pellets and wood chips. It combined expert presentations with site visits across the whole value chain: pellet production, district heating, energy contracting, boiler manufacturing, combined heat and power, biochar co-production, and bulk pellet delivery to the end user.

🛫 Global SAF production reached just ~1 million tonnes in 2024. To stay on track for net-zero aviation, the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s Net Zero Scenario calls for 400 million tonnes a year by 2050, a 400-fold increase in under three decades, requiring 1,600–3,000 new SAF production facilities worldwide, more than double today's ~700 oil refineries.

Reaching the ~40 million tonnes/year needed by 2030 will take an estimated $150–200 billion in cumulative investment and closing that gap will take coordinated action from policymakers, producers, airlines and investors alike.

🌲 The World Bioenergy Association is supporting the 8th European Biomass PowerON Conference, taking place 7–8 October 2026 in Stockholm, Sweden, organised by Fortes Media Group.

The 2026 programme covers EU ETS, carbon removals under the CRCF, financing and revenue optimisation, pellet markets, certification and supply chain digitalisation, alongside technology topics such as pyrolysis, advanced combustion, CHP efficiency and BECCS readiness. Selected participants can also join a pre-event visit to the E.ON Högbytorp facility on 6 October, a working example of circular energy and resource recovery.
