Stockholm MAP Chapter

Stockholm MAP Chapter Välkommen till Stockholms universitets MAP chapter! This fb page offers information about Stockholm University's MAP chapter.

--- English description of MAP --

MAP’s mission is to address structural injustices in academic philosophy and to remove barriers that impede participation in academic philosophy for members of marginalized groups. Through our international organizing team and graduate student-led network of autonomous chapters around the world, we aim to examine and dismantle mechanisms that prevent students from marginalized groups from participating in academic philosophy, as well as to promote philosophical work done from marginalized perspectives, and help improve working conditions for scholars from marginalized backgrounds.

INVITATION: MAP-seminar with Ane Engelstad (Bergen)

MAP kindly invites you to a MAP-seminar together with Ane Engelstad (Bergen), who will present and discuss her recent paper ”Should Political Philosophers Attend to Victim Testimony?” (see link and abstract below).

The seminar will take place on Thursday, 8 February, 15.00-17.00 in room D734 at the Department of Philosophy. All are welcome.

We hope you can make it!

Ane Engelstad (2023) ”Should Political Philosophers Attend to Victim Testimony?”
https://doi.org/10.1111/japp.12663

ABSTRACT
There is a growing recognition that victims of injustice may have privileged access to knowledge about the injustices they experience, and that injustices are perpetuated through silencing victims by taking them to be less credible, and through denying them the platform and capacity to speak. However, these are not ideas that political philosophers tend to engage with in a sustained manner, to the extent that they alter methodological approaches to be systematically attentive to victim testimony. In this article, I provide two arguments in favour of political philosophers attending to victim testimony, one moral, one epistemic, and demonstrate that the moral case has little purchase, but that the epistemic case is more successful. Then, I present the strongest case against including victim testimony in political philosophy, and I argue that it does not hold up to scrutiny. In so doing, I demonstrate how methodological practices in political philosophy could be improved through drawing on feminist social epistemology; attending to victim testimony can enrich political philosophy in epistemically acceptable ways, and it also corrects for a range of potential biases.

INVITATION: Discussion session with the author present

Dear friends, students and colleagues,

We at MAP Stockholm are happy to invite you all to participate in a discussion session together with us and Jessica Keiser on March 31st! The topic of the discussion will be Keiser’s paper “The ‘All Lives Matter’ response: QUD-shifting as epistemic injustice.” The event is open to faculty members and students at all levels, and we hope to create an informal and accessible space for interesting discussions. We especially encourage students who are interested in meeting and talking with professional philosophers to join us!

Important information:
The session will take place at the department of philosophy (SU), in D734 between 10.00-12.00. Since our time is limited, participants will be expected to read Keiser's paper in advance. The paper is open access and can be found here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11229-021-03171-y

If you have any questions or have trouble accessing the paper, please don’t hesitate to contact us by sending an e-mail to [email protected] or contacting us via our page: https://www.facebook.com/people/Stockholm-MAP-Chapter/100079592131256/

About Jessica Keiser:
Keiser is a lecturer in Theoretical Philosophy at the School of Philosophy, Religion, and History of Science at the University of Leeds. Keiser’s work is located at the intersection of philosophy of language and social/political philosophy, and in her recent book, Non-Ideal Foundations of Language (Routledge), Keiser develops a non-ideal metasemantics that retains the major insights of traditional frameworks while rejecting the social idealizations that guided them. NEW TERM, NEW MAP ACTIVITIES

Hej alla filosofistudenter!

(scroll down for English version)

Alice, Andrea and Siska

Dear students of philosophy,

Since last year, a chapter to the international organization MAP (Minorities and Philosophy) exists here at Stockholm University: MAP Stockholm! Below follows a short introduction of what MAP is, together with the events we are planning for the fall.

In short, MAP's mission is to address structural injustices in academic philosophy and to remove barriers that impede participation in academic philosophy for members of marginalized groups. Locally, this work is made possible by graduate student-led autonomous chapters, like MAP Stockholm.

For this fall, we are planning to continue our appreciated reading group. This term we will be reading "What is Race? Four Philosophical Perspectives" by Joshua Glasgow, Sally Haslanger, Chike Jeffers, and Quayshawn Spencer. The reading group is open to students on all levels, and is characterized by a prestigeless and open discussion environment (meetings will be held in english). We will start October 5 at 4pm and then meet every other Wednesday from 4pm-5pm. To sign up, send an e-mail to [email protected]. The reading group will continue to be on zoom.

We are also planning on inviting you all to a student session with an invited philosopher, but it is yet to be decided who will be invited and when the session will take place. More information will be sent out via our e-mail and our page.

For more info, contact [email protected] or follow us here on Facebook.

All the best,
Alice, Andrea and Siska

Hi all (Swedish below),

First of all, happy new year and hopefully you are having a good start to the new semester!

Last semester marks the start of our Stockholm MAP chapter. After our kick-off, we had a very successful reading group of Amia Srinivasan's The Right to S*x, we attended the African Philosophy World Conference, and we hosted a discussion with Teresa Marques.

We look forward to many more events this coming term! However, the pandemic makes it hard to meet in person right now. In the meantime, here are some things to keep in mind:

(1) We will continue the reading group with a new book. You can email [email protected] to sign up for the reading group. We will start again on March 2nd. One suggested reading is Miranda Fricker's Epistemic Injustice, but other suggestions for reading are more than welcome!

(2) To stay informed about MAP at SU, please email [email protected] to sign up for the mailing list (future announcements will primarily be sent out to the mailing list).

(3) If you want to help organize events, or if you have suggestions for MAP events, or you know of an event that you would like MAP to help promote, please let us know!

As soon as the pandemic permits it, we will organize in-person events again. Hopefully until very soon!

MAP Stockholm

Hej,

Allt gott,
MAP Stockholm

Welcome to join MAP's Feminist Philosophy Reading Group!

This semester, we’ll read Amia Srinivasan’s much discussed and highly praised Right to S*x (2021). We’ll meet bi-weekly, on Zoom, on Wednesdays at 4pm. The first meeting will be on 20 October. Everyone is very welcome to join! If you’d like to participate, please send an email to Romy ([email protected]), so she can send you the Zoom link etc.

For PhD students: there’s an opportunity to get 7,5 credits for your participation in the reading group, if you read some additional literature and write a paper at the end of it. If this sounds of interest, you can get in touch with Andrea ([email protected]), who can give you some more info.

Join MAP Stockholm at the 4th African Philosophy World Conference!

(NB: Registration deadline October 2)

The biennial African Philosophy World Conference will this year be held virtually, which gives us the opportunity to participate without cost from Sweden.

We at MAP Stockholm therefore want to invite you to attend the conference with us, and later meet to discuss what we've learned, questioned or become interested in. There is no expectation that participants will be present every day of the conference, so when we have more information about the schedule, you can pick which days/times/talks suits you. The discussion will be organized the day after the conference (October 15), and you are welcome to join whether you listened to just one or all of the talks (whether the discussion will be in person or over zoom will depend on the number of participants).

The theme this year is "An Exploration of Human Nature: Perspectives from African Philosophy" and the conference is organized by Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria (African Philosophy Society). It is scheduled to take place October 12-14, but we do not yet have any information about the time or details.

The conference requires registration, but the African Philosophy Society has agreed to registering us as a group. So if you want to come with us, send an e-mail to [email protected] telling Alice that you want to come together with your full name (for the registration). You will then get further information about the schedule and links.

The deadline is October 2, so make sure to send Alice an e-mail before that if you are interested in participating.

Kick-off event UPDATE

------------------------

It is now decided that the Kick-off will take place in person at SU. We will gather in room C497, Södra huset house C, floor 4. The room can take 40 people, but we'll be around 20, so we will all be able to keep distance when we discuss and fikar!

INVITATION TO KICK-OFF EVENT

Hej alla filosofistudenter!

(scroll down for the English version)

Alice, Andrea, Romy, Simon and Siska

Dear students of philosophy,

Finally, we are able to introduce the newly formed MAP chapter, MAP Stockholm, here at Stockholm University! And we’re pleased to invite all you to MAP Stockholm’s kick-off event on September 30th at 4pm!

To say something brief, Minorities and Philosophy's (MAP's) mission is to address structural injustices in academic philosophy and to remove barriers that impede participation in academic philosophy for members of marginalized groups. Locally, this work is made possible by graduate student-led autonomous chapters, like MAP Stockholm.

At the kick-off event, we’ll present MAP’s core aims and values in more detail and we'll introduce what we are hoping to achieve in Stockholm specifically – both for you students and the department. We’ll also present some of our plans and ideas for future events. After the presentation, there’ll be time for questions and feedback from the audience.

We hope to hold the event in person rather than online (in which case there will be fika!). But whether this is possible depends on how many people will be attending. We therefore kindly ask those planning to attend to let us know by filling out the following form: https://doodle.com/poll/fr66qbvwudktn25g?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link. When we know more, we will send an update about the location. UPDATE: We will meet in room C497, Södra huset C, floor 4.

We hope to see many of you on September 30th!

All the best,
Alice, Andrea, Romy, Simon and Siska
