Sustainability at the 2025 ILCA European Championships – Marstrand
The 2025 ILCA European Championships in Marstrand combined world-class sailing with strong environmental responsibility. The event fully complied with Sweden’s strict recycling and environmental laws, setting a benchmark for sustainable sports events in Europe.
Key Sustainability Highlights:
Recycling Made Easy: 15 dedicated stations across the harbour separated paper, plastic, and aluminium, with extra containers for high-volume waste.
Plastic Bottle Return: All plastic bottles were collected following Sweden’s Pant deposit-refund system, ensuring high recycling rates.
Organic Waste Management: Restaurants collaborated with local authorities to handle food waste separately and responsibly.
Eco-Friendly Catering: Meals were served on recycled paper plates with wooden cutlery, all sent for energy recovery after use.
Freshwater Provision: Sailors had access to high-quality tap water at multiple stations, reducing single-use bottles.
All of these initiatives were aligned with the EurILCA Sustainability Programme, demonstrating a coordinated effort to make sailing events more environmentally responsible. Readers are invited to learn more about the programme here.
By combining top-level competition with environmentally responsible practices, Marstrand 2025 demonstrated that major sailing events can leave a positive mark on both sport and the planet.
