Today our FUF group went on the first field trip of the semester to Alnarp's Agroecology Farm.
Besides looking at the impressive farm with loads of different vegetables, flowers and herbs, we got to plant the plants for the new herb spiral. It has been nice to get outside of Lund and see something else than campus.
But nicest was to hear Claire talk about the organisation with passion and knowledge. It is inspiring to hear how the farm is completely student run and self-sufficient.
We learnt about the concepts of agriculture, columbian composting, no-dig farming, and consumer supported agriculture (CSA).
CSA is a coming trend to share farmers risks amongst the community. People pay for their share of vegetables in the beginning of season and then get a weekly supply of whatever is ready to be harvested. That way farmers can rely on the demand, know how much to produce, limit overproduction (waste) and in case of shock and crisis, they can put the boxes together as they can and do not have to guarantee a supply of a certain crop.
I'm really interested about reading more about this in developing countries and who knows, maybe we have had some collaboration talk today for exciting upcoming events... ;)
For now I will dive deeper into these topics and recommend you highly to visit Alnarp's Agroecology Farm! (Hot tip: Their harvest market is on Friday!!)
