”Aging With or Aging Out of Drug Use? Older Adults’ Experiences of Aging with Long-Term Drug Use”

The reasons behind the interviewees’ common will to quit varied, but there was a clear pattern concerning older age. Older age could serve as motivation to quit, and some just expressed that they were “tired of it.” Others addressed the negative consequences associated with drug use, such as poor health or imprisonment. Often, they expressed their process in terms of age-related maturity and insight, valuing things differently now compared with before. This theme represents a form of aging out.”
