When we talk about relaxation in a newborn, we are entering a very subtle space, related to how the baby organizes themselves within the relationship with the adult.
In infant massage, relaxation is not something that is “produced,” but something that may emerge under certain conditions: when the baby feels sufficiently welcomed, when their timing is respected, and when touch is not intrusive.
Each baby has their own way of responding to touch. Some soften quickly, others need more time, and some prefer to observe before letting go. All these responses are valid and meaningful.
Relaxation can show itself in different ways: a slower breath, a body that releases tension, a more present gaze, or simply a greater willingness to stay in the interaction.
It does not always happen immediately, and it does not always look the same. It grows within the quality of the encounter, rather than within the gesture itself.
