Today, we celebrated the halfway point of the “Reveal the Hidden Competences” pilot programme. The breakfast event brought together trainees, employers, project partners, and representatives from the non-profit and public sectors to learn more about the project, reflect on the first phase, share experiences, and look ahead to the autumn.

The programme launched in January and aims to match highly qualified international talent with employers seeking specific skills and expertise.

Through a three-month work placement, complementary training, and ongoing support, trainees have demonstrated their knowledge and capabilities in the workplace, improved their Swedish language skills, expanded their professional networks, developed new competencies, and gained confidence throughout the programme.

It was an absolute pleasure to speak with the trainees today and hear how, in some cases for the first time in Sweden, they have been able to work in their field of expertise and gain valuable real-world experience.

HIC has played an active role as one of the programme partners, helping to guide the process and identifying foreign-born academics from our network to participate in the programme.

We are just one part of a larger team, with each organisation contributing its own strengths and expertise. Huge thanks to everyone involved in the project: Linda Torner and Fatmire Dema of WOW Foundations; Emma Frank Landgren, Malin Grahn Marksell, and Wilma Johansson of Arbetsmarknadsförvaltningen Helsingborg; Sara Sellerfors of Dream Talent; Karin Heri and Kristofer Rönström of Tent Partnership for Refugees; and of course, Region Skåne for funding the pilot.

Congratulations to our first trainees, who have participated with commitment and humility: Nantli Soto, Monika Orlikowska, Anda Stefania Ghita, Ranu Vishwakarma, Amal Vincent Arthur, Dinesha Dilrukshi Abeysinghe, Samika Javare, and Saima Khan! We've also met many other potential trainees whom we hope to place next time!

Our thanks must also go to the employers who hosted our trainees: Deep Studios, Edument, Kenvue, and Nestlé/Zoégas. In the autumn, we'll be joined by more!

🌼🌿 Midsummer celebrations in Sweden | June 19–20 🌿🌼

🇸🇪 Midsummer, or Midsommar, is one of Sweden's most cherished holidays and a celebration that truly captures the spirit of Swedish summer. Taking place around the summer solstice, it marks the longest days of the year when nature is in full bloom, and daylight stretches late into the evening.

🎻 For many Swedes, Midsummer Eve is a time to gather with family and friends, enjoy the outdoors, and celebrate the beauty of the season. One of the most beloved traditions is raising and dancing around the midsommarstång (maypole), decorated with flowers and greenery. Traditional dances, live folk music, and cheerful singing bring communities together across the country.

🌼 Flower crowns are another classic Midsummer tradition. Many people spend the day weaving wildflowers into crowns to wear during the celebrations, embracing the connection between Swedish culture and nature.

🍓 No Midsummer is complete without a festive meal. Traditional favourites include pickled herring, new potatoes with dill, fresh strawberries and cream, and snaps, often enjoyed outdoors with family and friends.

🎉 In Helsingborg, two of the city's most popular Midsummer celebrations take place in beautiful historic settings:

🌹 Fredriksdal Museums & Gardens
Experience traditional folk dancing, ring dances, live folk music, and a historic Midsummer atmosphere in the heart of Helsingborg.

🌺 Sofiero Palace & Gardens
Celebrate Midsummer on the Royal Football Field with maypole dancing, traditional games, family activities, and summer festivities surrounded by stunning gardens.

For the most up-to-date schedules, activities, and practical information in your area, please check local press, Facebook groups, venue websites, or www.helsingborg.se before attending.

We wish everyone a joyful Midsummer filled with sunshine, flowers, good food, and great company! ☀️🌸

✨️ One of the most rewarding aspects of HIC's work is seeing meaningful connections happen when people who might never have met otherwise find themselves around the same table.

During today's Drop-in Session, we met two international professionals who were at different stages of their journey in Sweden. 🇸🇪

While their backgrounds and experiences differed, they quickly discovered several things in common. Both had relocated to Sweden through their partners, both had partners working at Koenigsegg, and both were navigating many of the same questions about building a future here.

Lakshmi Vishal brings solid experience as a QA Tester, with expertise in automated, manual, exploratory, and scalability testing, alongside a strong interest in UX and UI.

Magdalena Zaborowska has a background in engineering within manufacturing and quality-focused environments, working across teams to solve problems, improve processes, and contribute to technical documentation.

What stood out was the depth of experience and expertise they brought. Like many internationals, they arrived with valuable skills, professional achievements, and a strong desire to contribute.

🌍 At the same time, they were exploring familiar questions: how to navigate the Swedish job market, the role of networking, the importance of language, cultural expectations, and how to present international experience in a way that resonates locally.

The conversation evolved into a broader exchange about careers, everyday life in Sweden, language learning, and the challenges many internationals face in making their competencies visible. A recurring theme was how much hidden expertise exists among internationals that is not always immediately recognised in a new context. 🫶

Moments like these remind us that settling into a new country is rarely a journey taken alone. Often, the most valuable insights come from meeting someone who understands your situation, shares a similar challenge, or simply offers a new perspective.

Thank you to both participants for joining us today!

☕ On Friday morning, around a table at Bruket Kaffebar, something special happened once again.

New faces met familiar faces. Stories were shared. Experiences were exchanged. People from different countries, backgrounds, and walks of life came together through a simple cup of coffee and a shared connection to Helsingborg.

One of the most rewarding parts of what we do is witnessing the journey of newcomers. We often see people arrive feeling uncertain, nervous, or overwhelmed by life in a new city. Then, little by little, conversations start flowing, connections are made, and confidence grows. Before long, they are sharing their own stories, helping others, and becoming part of the community themselves. ✨️

That is what HIC is all about: creating spaces where people feel welcome, supported, and connected.

This Coffee Morning also allowed us to learn more about one of Helsingborg's local gems, Bruket Kaffebar. A big thank you to Hanna and William for sharing the story behind the café and giving us a sneak peek into their latest project, where they’ll move the bakery one door closer and develop the space into an exciting new meeting place. 😍

Events held at local venues help international residents discover Helsingborg beyond the guidebooks and build stronger connections to the city and the people who make it unique.

Thank you to everyone who joined us! Whether it was your first HIC event or your fiftieth, we're grateful to have you as part of this community.

🌍 Friday's international group came from Poland, Germany, China, the USA, and the UK, via many other countries in between!

Stay tuned for more HIC events and see you at the next coffee morning at Mindpark on August 21st! ☕🌍💙

🌿☀️ What a fantastic day for a Climate Walk in Helsingborg! ☀️🌿

This week, together with Miljöverkstaden and our wonderful guides Caroline and Simon, we explored our city through a sustainability lens and discovered stories hidden in plain sight.

Starting in Oceanhamnen, we learned about Helsingborg's environmental initiatives, the transformation of the Öresund from one of the region's most polluted waters to the beautiful strait we know today, and how nature helps keep the sea healthy. One of our favourite facts? The blue mussels in Öresund filter huge amounts of water every single day! 🦪💙

We visited the bike storage facility at Helsingborg C while learning about the city’s mission to promote sustainable transportation. This initiative is an integral part of Helsingborg’s commitment to becoming carbon-neutral by the year 2030.

Another topic that sparked a lot of discussion was the importance of trees and green spaces. Trees help improve air quality, provide shade, support biodiversity, and help cool down our cities during warmer periods. It was a great reminder that something as simple as planting more trees makes a real difference.

The walk also took us through some of Helsingborg's history. We learned that the land on which the statue of Magnus Stenbock stands was reclaimed from the sea. We also visited various historic landmarks, finishing our tour beside an old, decaying tree near Kärnan. While it may not look very special at first glance, it is home to countless small forms of life. Sometimes the most valuable ecosystems are the ones we hardly notice.

The whole experience was both fun and eye-opening. It gave us a new perspective on the city we live in and reminded us to pay a little more attention to the nature around us. There is so much happening beneath the surface that we often overlook.

A big thank you to Miljöverkstaden, Caroline and Simon for sharing your knowledge and passion with us! 💚

💡Bonus Question: How much seawater do you think a single blue mussel can filter in one hour?

A) Less than 1 litre
B) 1–6 litres
C) 10–20 litres
Drop your guess in the comments!

Every international journey begins with uncertainty, but it is often the people we meet along the way that make the difference. 🤗

🎓 Last Friday, HIC had the pleasure of joining the farewell gathering for the Master's students of the Strategic Communication programme at Lund University Campus Helsingborg. Before the official graduation celebrations begin, students came together one last time with classmates, professors, and friends to reflect on their experiences and look ahead to what comes next.

The atmosphere was filled with mixed emotions. There was excitement for new opportunities, pride in how far everyone had come, and perhaps a little sadness as an important chapter came to an end.

We greatly appreciated being included in this celebration and the meaningful conversations it inspired. 😊

Our sincere thanks to Frida Hessel for the invitation and for creating an opportunity for HIC to engage with such a talented and internationally minded group of students. We were grateful for the opportunity to meet students from many different backgrounds, hear their stories, and share a few words of encouragement as they prepare for the next stage of their journey.

🌍 At HIC, we know that moving to a new country involves much more than studying or finding a job. It means learning how to navigate everyday life, understanding new systems, building connections, and finding a sense of belonging. That is why we remain committed to providing practical information, guidance, and support to internationals in Helsingborg.

To all graduates and soon-to-be graduates, congratulations on this achievement. We wish you success, resilience, and exciting opportunities in the chapters ahead. Wherever your journey takes you, we hope Sweden will continue to feel a little more like home.

Thank you for having us, and we look forward to staying connected with many of you in the future. 💙
