Umnandi Our mission is to provide knowledge and motivate young South Africans to pursue entrepreneurship.

umnandi’s mission is to provide young South Africans with practical knowledge and motivation to pursue entrepreneurial projects that benefit their communities. umnandi is a project initiated by students of Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship (CSE) in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders South Africa (EWB-SA). umnandi’s vision is to inspire and empower young South Africans, who are passiona

te to make a substantial difference in their society and their own lives. umnandi provides them with practical tools to identify opportunities, evaluate possibilities and use their means to make a change. This way, umnandi enables the youth to find practical solutions to problems that they otherwise deemed unsolvable. umnandi intends to achieve this goal by conducting entrepreneurial workshops that teach enterprising concepts and address existing issues in disadvantaged communities. Two inaugural workshops will be held in Johannesburg and Cape Town in April 2017. The workshops will introduce fundamental concepts around teamwork, idea generation, lean development and more. They will encourage students to see their environment from a new perspective and enable them to recognise and to take on solvable problems that they previously took for granted or considered unchangeable. The workshop will also introduce a case based on an issue in the local community. The students will be divided into groups and tasked to develop solutions to the problem and pitch their idea. These solutions may serve as input for projects conducted by Engineers Without Borders South Africa. For the future, umnandi seeks to develop the concept further, involve more partners and expand to other cities.

Did you know that 39% of young South Africans are out of work? 😳Being discouraged with the labour market can lead to further issues, such as giving up on further education and training. 😥
And the unemployment issue does not stop here. It affects everybody. In South Africa, out of all 38 million people of working age, only 16.4 million work, while the others are either unemployed or economically inactive. 💭
We, Umnandi have made it our mission to provide young, unemployed South Africans with practical knowledge and motivation to pursue entrepreneurial projects that benefit their local communities, so they will no longer be dependant on others. 🇿🇦💪😍🌺❤️

LEARNING ABOUT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY STRATEGIES

Hi!
My Name is Thato Brander and I am currently enrolled In the Corp Track at Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship. I have just completed a course called Intellectual Property Strategies which centers on the strategic management of technology through patents and other control mechanisms.

In this course, we were presented with a case project, where we had to analyze a metabolic engineering technology patent portfolio and highlight initiatives that are to be taken to develop these intellectual assets to a commercial stage. This case was challenging and pushed me outside my comfort zone. In retrospect, I can see the value that this course and the project has had in my understanding of intellectual property (IP), as I am now able to identify intellectual property and make decisions on how and when to obtain protection for it.

What makes the Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship unique is that you are presented with real cases to work on. And throughout the program, we work in multidisciplinary teams to complete the case project and other tasks. I have learned so much from working with a talented team and my understanding of IP has also been further developed.

An insightful story by an international student attending Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship!

"THE ENTREPRENEURIAL INSIDER"

Hi!

My name is Christiana Doran and this week I am sharing my story as an international student at Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship. During fika breaks (potentially the world’s greatest invention), I sometimes get asked how I came to be in Gothenburg and the answer is - Chalmers! Before packing up my life and moving to Sweden, I had studied Medical Science and Law at the University of Technology, Sydney. I had always wanted to use my background in a creative and collaborative way but was never quite sure how.

My interests had always seemed so diverse yet as I continued to research them the common thread seemed to be at Chalmers. There were just so many cool and interesting projects happening within the school that I wanted to be a part of it and now I am excited to be one of 13 students enrolled in the Corporate track of the Masters of Entrepreneurship and Business Design programme. The programme is quite unique, operating in the gap between research and industry and because of Chalmers’ academic focus we get to work with industry relevant projects transforming research into a reality whilst also exploring the concept of intrapreneurship through classes and internships. The thing that really makes the programme though, is its location. Gothenburg provides the perfect environment for innovation from a social and cultural perspective and it is heartening walking around the city seeing shops with technologies that I had only ever read about as prototypes like the Hodving bicycle helmet.

Suffice to say, living in Gothenburg has been a great experience and it is amazing to think that in just ten weeks of the programme, we have been equipped with technical knowledge and practical skills; worked on interesting technical projects; formed lifelong friendships and even found time to party together in Copenhagen! The experience has been transformational and I am excited for what is to come.
