Has Tirba the cat caught your attention? Good! May we have a moment of your attention please.

Since we became active again on social media this season – especially after we opened up about our polytunnel mishap – we’ve received so many comments that, quite shamefully, we still haven’t had the chance to reply to.

We would love to not just document and publicise our farm activities but also actively engage and interact with everyone who reached out. Only that the beginning of the season is an incredibly busy time for us – so much else demand our attention, energy and deliberation.

Please bear with us as we clear our backlog of myriad tasks before giving each of your messages and comments the response you deserve from us!

Throwback to when we scrubbed up and went to accept an award for our market, Agora på Vårvik, alongside Stilbyrån – exactly two months ago!

Much of our work, in the vein of agroecology, revolves around societal impact and our servicing the local people and food systems; creating Agora to be the stepping stone was how we planned to cross the threshold in Trollhättan. It’s a huge boost of morale to be seen and feel seen, for what we do and represent. We’re also deeply honoured to the first-ever recipient of the Rural Development award category.

Massive thank you to Trollhättan Business Awards, Trollhättans Stad, Leader Göta älv & Säveån, Hushållningssällskapet Västra and LRF Trollhättan for the recognition!

Vårt arbete, i agroekologins anda, handlar om lokal påverkan och att stärka människor och matsystem. Att skapa .varvik var vårt sätt att ta ett viktigt steg i Trollhättan. Att bli sedda för det vi gör betyder enormt mycket.

Early May Restaurant Offerings

It’s lovely to have restaurant orders rolling in and getting picked up by Gårdslagret on Tuesdays again – must mean the market garden has emerged from its winter slumber and started providing again!

Early-season Asian greens and brassicas – transplanted to and raised in our caterpillar tunnels beginning of March onwards – make up all our harvests this time of the year. These sprouting broccoli-like stems and fresh-cut mustard-y leaves are as savoury and precious as the spring sun and herbaceous flavours we’ve longed for since autumn.

This week we have mizuna (Japanese mustard leaves) going to Restaurang Vrå - Clarion Post; choysum (Chinese broccoli/菜心) and gailan (Chinese kale/芥蘭) goes to and .

𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽

This time of the year stirs revival and optimism – but what’s pushing our feet forward is an intensifying sense of urgency.

114 raised bed reawakening at once. In varying states of overwintered neglect and weeds overgrown. The luxury of pristine newness has worn off now that they’ve been cultivated on for two full years, and only a fair bit of maintenance and restoration will ensure they’re fit for purpose.

The work is arduous and unglamorous: we uncover the bed, broadfork to loose, deeply sanitise to rid of persistent weeds, rake to reshape, top up wood chips in pathways. Repeat.

It’s a mammoth task for a three-person full-time crew – with the occasional outside help – with pressing time sensitivity of sowing/transplanting windows and financial scarcity gusting behind our backs. But at least we’re relatively buffered by external economic calamities, since we operate fully on human-powered hand tools – but the costs are passed on to our bodies.

Yet we push on. With every bed, block and section of the market garden we revive, this year’s crops are bound to move in. The promise of new growth and abundance is within a toe’s reach – we dare to hope. The temperature is rising, and so is our energy levels. After a long winter staring out at blankets of white snow, black plastic tarps and decaying shades of brown, it’s a wonder seeing the palettes of liveliness emerging rather than diminishing from the soil.

We work quietly on, yet our minds can finally wander off the drudgery and admire the beauty we co-created with nature.

With spring back in our step, so have we regained our reason of being.

Vår i steget

Den här tiden på året väcker livslust och framtidstro – men det som verkligen driver oss framåt är en växande känsla av att tiden är knapp.

114 odlingsbäddar vaknar till liv på en och samma gång. Alla i olika skick, märkta av vinterns framfart och ogräs som tagit över. Den där känslan av nystart har bleknat efter två års odling, och nu krävs både omsorg och slit för att få dem i form igen.

För ett litet team på tre heltidsarbetande – med sporadisk hjälp utifrån – är det ett jättejobb. Särskilt när sådd och utplantering måste ske i rätt ögonblick, och ekonomin hela tiden flåsar oss i nacken. Samtidigt står vi ändå ganska stadigt, skyddade från omvärldens svängningar, eftersom vi arbetar med enkla handverktyg och ren muskelkraft. Men det har sitt pris – i våra kroppar.

Och ändå fortsätter vi.

Med varje bädd, varje kvarter, varje del av trädgården som vi väcker till liv, gör årets grödor sig redo att ta plats. Löftet om grönska och överflöd känns plötsligt nära – nästan inom räckhåll. Temperaturen stiger, och det gör vi också. Efter en lång vinter av snötäcken, svarta presenningar och jord i dova bruna toner är det nästan overkligt att se färgerna återvända, hur livet sakta men säkert spirar igen.

Vi jobbar på i det tysta, men tankarna får äntligen vandra fritt – bort från det monotona, och istället vila i det vackra vi skapar tillsammans med naturen.

Nu är våren tillbaka i stegen. Och med den – meningen med allt vi gör.
