🍁🍂 A fantastic start to November!🍂🍁

On November 3, the SULF Doctoral Candidate Association (SULF-DCA) visited Lund University, where the board hosted an information session for doctoral candidates, followed by a pizza mingle. 🍕

The next day, November 4, we were at Malmö universitet for a lunch event that brought together PhD students from diverse departments and research areas.

Both events were well attended, and we are so grateful to everyone who joined and shared their perspectives. 💬

The mission at SULF-DCA is simple: to build a strong, informed, and connected doctoral community—and these events are a big step toward that goal.

New report: How current migration policies harm international researchers and undermine higher education in Sweden
The report, by the SULF Doctoral Candidates Association/ SULF:s doktorandförening, highlights the ongoing challenges that international PhD candidates and early career researchers encounter in the current Swedish migration system. The testimonials show that the current migration policies cause significant problems for many people.

A few months ago, we (the SULF Doctoral Candidates Association) wrote to ask international doctoral students about how their migration status has affected their studies and employment. In light of recent world events, where foreign academics are facing threats and deportation due to their political advocacy or nationality, we would also like to hear from you about 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺𝘀 - whether you have felt the need to censor your public statements, felt pressure to alter your research because you needed a supervisor's support to renew a residence permit, or had your ISP weaponized in a way that jeopardized your residency in Sweden. ✨ Incredible Teamwork at SULF Congress 2024! ✨
A huge shoutout to everyone who contributed to making this year’s SULF Congress such a remarkable success! This might just be the best one yet for SULF-DCA!
We’re proud to have presented 9 motions, ensuring that the voices of doctoral candidates were heard loud and clear by SULF staff and the newly elected executive board. 📣 Some of the critical issues we brought to the table include:
- Labor conditions (salaries & workload)
- Migration challenges
- Authorship
- Language barriers
The congress decisions will shape SULF’s priorities for the next three years, and we’re proud to be part of this democratic process of change for the better!
🌟 A historic highlight: This was the first SULF Congress to offer interpreters from Swedish to English, a decision made in the last SULF Congress in 2021. The effort was greatly appreciated and ensured greater inclusivity for participants in need.
Together, we’re creating a better future for doctoral candidates and academics everywhere. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!

Last week in beautiful sunny Stockholm, the new SULF-DCA board 2024-25 had our first meeting😎 The main theme of this year is Salray and Labor conditions. We will keep you posted about our progress, please stay tuned!

I torsdags och fredags hade SULF:s doktorandförenings nyvalda styrelse internat i Stockholm. På torsdagen fick man träffa bl.a. SULF:s ordförande Sanna Wolk och förbundsdirektör Lars Geschwind. På fredagen årets första styrelsemöte.

Doktorandföreningens övergripande tema för i år blir Lön och villkor, där man kommer titta bl.a. på hur doktorandlönestegen skiljer sig mellan olika lärosäten och olika ämnen, samt hur doktorandlöner förhåller sig till andra nybörjare inom statlig sektor. Andra frågor som aktualiserades under mötet var dålig tillämpning av regelverk kring kurskrav samt den stående kampanjen om (permanent) uppehållstillstånd.
