Hi everyone! I’m Sveta. I run the aid work in Kyiv, Ukraine, for Children’s Embassy – a small organization that has stood with Ukraine’s children and families since 1991.

Air raids day and night, too little sleep, too tired to think – and I still passed my written driving test!
Next up: 60 hours behind the wheel with an instructor. Then the road test, and the license is mine.

The war will end. Come to Ukraine then! I’ll be your “driving guide” – and you’ll be my guinea pigs 😄

I’m Mirjam. Since 1991, Children’s Embassy has stood with children and families in Ukraine.

A child once asked me how people who had never met them could say they love them. I’ve never forgotten it.

Kindness from a stranger can’t end a war. But it can tell a child they’re not alone. 💛

Friends’ House sat empty without its kids.

Friends’ House is a living room for kids in Ukraine, run by Children’s Embassy. A place to play, read, and be with friends.

Air raid alert in the morning. Another at noon. Then the power went out. For a few days, the doors stayed closed.

But the kids came back. The beads, the books, and their friends were waiting.

Katya is our coordinator at Friends’ House in Ukraine.

”Help comes in many forms. Some families need warm clothes, others need hygiene products. But as a mama, I believe what children need most is food. How can you learn when you’re hungry?”

So Katya and our team met with teachers. Together they read through requests from parents and looked at how each family lives. Now we help pay for school lunches, so no child has to sit in class hungry.

”I’m happy for the kids who’ll have a warm, tasty lunch every day!”

Every morning we pray together. If the internet works.

Today it rang while I was writing.

Now coffee. And prayer.

Hi everyone!
My name is Valerija. I’m 11, and I just started sixth grade.

I like sixth grade. We have new subjects and lots of new things!

I love going to school. We ride the school bus, and the girls and I sing on the way there and on the way home. At school I hang out with my friends.

I also go to Friend’s House. My friends and I love it there.

When I get home from school, I head into town and ride my bike.
That’s my week!

I live in a stream of news, and most of it is sad.

The alerts keep coming: Attention, air raid alert. Attention, all clear. Attention, elevated threat level.

I keep checking the alert map and the Telegram channels. They decide what plans I can make for the day. Planning work can be hard … reality makes its own changes.

“Living in my phone” adds to the stress.

So what calms me? The forest, the quiet, and a full basket of mushrooms.

I come home tired, but happy. 💚

The forest is my best therapist! 🌲

Natalia is raising her daughters on her own in wartime Ukraine. A package from our donors reached her family. This is what she wrote to us.

“Hello!
Heartfelt thanks to the caring hearts for the help our family needed so much 🙏💯

Your support, the things and the hygiene supplies, has been a huge help to us in this hard time...

We came to Ukraine in 1991.

Children were living on the streets, and stray dogs looked after them. The dogs kept them warm at night. They were the children’s mattress and their blanket. They were the only ones who cared.

Children and dogs were always together. Two groups without a home, giving each other the love they both lacked.

One thought stayed with us:
Can it be true that the dogs care more about these children than we do?

It cut us to the heart.

So we got two dogs of our own. Ammi, a Labrador. Molli, a French bulldog. With those two beside us, we helped many children.

We still miss them.

That is how it started. We were with these children before the war. We are with them now. We will be with them after.

We don’t call this our work. It is an assignment in our Heavenly Father’s field. That is why we’re here.

Artem lives in Ukraine. This is his diary, in his own words.

Hi!

I’m Artem, an 11-year-old fifth-grader.

I learn all sorts of things, although sometimes not everything works out. Dad and Grandma say that if you keep trying, you’ll eventually succeed. I hope I will! In my free time, I go to singing, visual arts and young journalists’ clubs, and weightlifting.

At home, I help Dad by carrying wood to the shed, and I carry buckets in the potato field.

I enjoy going to the playground. I have a lot of friends.

Last summer, I went to Sweden with my sister and my dad. It is a beautiful country. Everything was clean and the people were hospitable. The sunset over the Baltic Sea was unbelievably beautiful.

Traveling is fun, and I hope I get to see the world, as my dad says. But now Grandma says I must do my homework. So bye now!

Next Monday, Tanya takes over the diary.
