Den fjärde maj klockan 13:00 sänds Östersjöseminariet direkt från Sjöhistoriska. Ett seminarium som belyser Östersjöns mående, och konkreta åtgärder för att gå från ord till handling för Östersjöns hälsa.

seminariet arrangeras av Stiftelsen Östersjökontraktet Voice of the Ocean Svenska Båtunionen Saltsjön-Mälarens Båtförbund och Sjöhistoriska

Most maps we use place land at the centre. Continents define the world, and the ocean becomes the space in between.

But from the ocean, the view is different.
The Spilhaus projection offers an alternative perspective. Instead of dividing the planet into separate oceans, it presents one continuous body of water, connected and global. The continents are pushed to the edges, and the ocean becomes the centre of the story.

This reflects a simple truth: there is only one ocean.

Not five. Not seven. One interconnected system that regulates climate, supports life, and connects the planet.

The way we map the world shapes how we understand it. And perhaps, how we choose to care for it.

During Allt för sjön 2026, the Royal Swedish Sailing Society, in collaboration with Voice of the Ocean, presents the educational initiative Hej Havet! on Marina scenen.

In an inspiring conversation, you will learn how this material is used to strengthen children’s and young people’s curiosity about life below the surface and the importance of understanding the ocean, for a more conscious, knowledge-based and sustainable boating life.

Join us this 8th of March at 12:00 or the 14 of March at 13:00 at the Marina scenen at Stockholmsmässan.

See you there!

This week, our CEO Sanna Thimmig-Johansen is attending the World Economic Forum in Davos.

On Wednesday, she will join the programme at TPC House Ocean Day, a forum focused on solutions for a healthy and resilient ocean. The event brings together leaders, innovators, and ocean advocates to strengthen collaboration, accelerate policy progress, and mobilise finance for ocean health.

At Voice of the Ocean, we believe that a positive ocean stewardship starts with understanding. We connect science, storytelling, and knowledge to help communities, decision makers, and partners act on reliable information.

We look forward to connecting with partners, new and long standing, and to sharing insights from Davos as we continue working toward a future where everyone understands, respects, and protects the ocean.

Season’s greetings and best wishes for the year ahead

As the year draws to a close, we would like to thank everyone who has been part of Voice of the Ocean’s work over the past year.

Researchers, educators, ambassadors, partners, and collaborators — your shared curiosity, expertise, and commitment continue to strengthen knowledge about the ocean and make it accessible to more people.

The challenges facing the ocean are complex, but progress is built through long-term collaboration, trust in science, and a willingness to learn together.

We look forward to continuing this work in the years ahead.

Wishing you a calm holiday season and a brilliant start to the new year.

From depth to dialogue.

We connect science, history, and communication to give the ocean a stronger voice.

Our vision is simple: a world where the ocean is understood, respected, and protected by all.

Through research, technology, and storytelling, we bring the ocean's stories to life, turning curiosity into knowledge, and knowledge into action.

Did you know that what happens in the ocean at the micro level can influence our entire climate? 🌊

That’s precisely what ocean researcher Dr. Anna Bulczak from the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences is studying in her work on underwater turbulence in the Baltic Sea.

Her research focuses on underwater movements; processes that we don’t see from the surface, yet which play a decisive role in how the ocean absorbs heat and carbon dioxide. By studying turbulence on this tiny scale, Anna is helping to fill critical gaps in climate models and improve our understanding of how the ocean regulates the climate system.

It may sound small, but the implications are enormous.

What happens when a 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦 mixes the sea? 🌊

This figure shows how the ocean’s structure changed in early October 2025.

In the top panel, the colours represent salinity (salt concentration), and in the lower panel density. For most of September, the water was strongly stratified, with lighter, fresher water near the surface and heavier, saltier water below.

Then, around the 4th of October, Storm Amy passed over the area. The strong winds mixed the layers, bringing up saltier, denser water from below. You can see this as surface salinity (top panel) and density (bottom panel) both increase sharply after the storm.

When storms like Amy sweep across the North Atlantic and research vessels must stay in port, our autonomous gliders continue their missions below the surface. They make it possible to collect valuable data in conditions too dangerous for humans to observe.

These measurements are scientifically crucial. They show how the ocean redistributes heat, salt, and nutrients during extreme weather. This helps us understand how the marine environment responds to a changing climate.

By working with autonomous systems, we make sure that ocean monitoring never stops.

🌊 A world record for cleaner oceans!

Our sister company MidOcean joined the mission with one of their vessels, supporting this record-breaking effort alongside many dedicated partners.
Hands 2 Ocean set a new world record for the most underwater waste collected in 24 hours, 16.4 tonnes! 💪

Among the findings: two cars, two boats, four tonnes of tyres, and 200 kilos of old batteries. A reminder of how much still lies hidden beneath the surface, and how powerful teamwork can be.

It’s proof that real change happens when we work together for the ocean. Every action counts.
