Training Workshop Report: Podcast and Video Production in the Context of Conflict Sensitivity

1. General Objective
The workshop aimed to strengthen journalists’ capacities in producing audio and visual content through modern media tools — such as podcasts and short videos — as effective means of delivering news and information in line with the principles of ethical journalism and conflict sensitivity. It also sought to enhance their storytelling and community engagement skills.
2. Training Methodology and Course Progress
The workshop adopted a participatory and practical approach, combining theoretical explanation with hands-on exercises.
Throughout the day, participants were able to:
1. Understand the fundamentals of podcast and short video production, including a practical overview of tools and software used in the process.
2. Gain skills in audio-visual scriptwriting, from defining the idea and objectives, to building the narrative frame, and writing the final episode script.
3. Implement practical exercises (Zero Episode) to develop real podcast scripts, exchange feedback, and discuss technical improvements.
4. Learn audio editing using Audacity, including sound cleaning, volume adjustment, and adding basic sound effects.
5. Practice video editing with CapCut, covering cutting clips, adding text, visual effects, and background music.
3. Workshop Outcomes
Participants gained a strong understanding of the importance of using multimedia (podcasts and videos) to communicate messages and stories effectively and rapidly.
They mastered the process of scriptwriting using narrative framing techniques, improving their ability to plan content and structure episodes professionally.
They became familiar with key technical tools for audio and video production and acquired basic editing skills.
Participants expressed willingness to collaborate on joint media projects addressing Sudanese issues related to conflict and peacebuilding.
4. Recommendations
1. Continue organizing advanced multimedia production trainings to enhance journalists’ technical skills.
2. Encourage teamwork and collaboration among journalists to produce joint podcast and video projects.
3. Integrate storytelling and conflict-sensitive journalism skills into ongoing training programs.
4. Provide technical and advisory support for participants interested in launching independent podcast or video programs.
5. General Impressions
The workshop was characterized by high engagement and enthusiasm. Participants appreciated the practical approach, emphasizing that the skills gained in podcast and short video production will empower them to express humanitarian and social issues more effectively and amplify their journalistic voices.
They also commended the hands-on structure that allowed them to move from concept to production within one day.
