📸 Highlights from the public consultation held on Saturday, 21 March 2026 in Takamaka on the proposed Seasonal Protected Areas (SPAs) for sea turtles.

Since 2020, the UNDP Seychelles Global Environment Facility has been supporting Marine Conservation Society Seychelles (MCSS) and Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Natural Resources in advancing this initiative, which is now moving forward with the proposed designation of Seychelles’ 1️⃣ Seasonal Protected Areas for sea turtles.

The session brought together community members and stakeholders to share feedback and discuss the proposed co-management approach aimed at reducing disturbances to this critically endangered species in South Mahé.

The Nature Reserves and Conservancy Act (2022) provides for the designation of Seasonal Protected Areas during the turtle nesting season (October–April), targeting key beaches up to the high water mark:
• Anse Intendance • Anse Cachee • Anse Corail • Anse Bazarca
• Anse Petite Police • Anse Grand Police

Public access to these beaches will remain open, with certain activities managed or restricted during the nesting season to maximise nesting success.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the discussion, your input is key to shaping effective conservation action. 🌊🐢

Women in Conservation Gather on Praslin for RECOS Project Networking Evening

On 6 March 2026, the RECOS Project brought together 20 women actively involved in environmental protection, conservation initiatives and community awareness on Praslin for a special networking evening held at Tapas Lounge, Le Duc Hotel, Côte d'Or.

The event, organized in recognition of International Women’s Day, also aligned with important environmental observances including World Seagrass Day (1 March) and World Wildlife Day (3 March). The gathering created an opportunity for women working in different areas of environmental protection to connect, exchange experiences and discuss the challenges and opportunities they face in promoting conservation and community awareness.

Hosted by Ms. Vicky Durand, Community Engagement Officer for the RECOS Project, the evening encouraged dialogue and collaboration among participants who play an important role in protecting and promoting the natural environment of Praslin.

A highlight of the event was a collaborative canvas activity, where each participant added a symbol, word or message reflecting her personal commitment to protecting the environment. The canvas now stands as a collective pledge representing the shared responsibility of safeguarding the island’s coastal and marine ecosystems.
The evening also led to the creation of a new WhatsApp communication channel titled “Voices of Nature.” The platform aims to connect individuals across the islands who are actively contributing to environmental protection and community awareness, allowing them to share initiatives, activities and important information related to conservation efforts.

Participants were also introduced to the work of the RECOS Project, including its efforts in coastal ecosystem restoration and community engagement, as well as the development of a future Educational Marine Area intended to support environmental learning and long-term stewardship of Praslin’s marine environment.

The RECOS Project is co-funded by the Commission de l’Océan Indien (COI), Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM).

A successful stakeholder workshop was held on Thursday 19th February 2026, 27 stakeholders gathered at Laïla Seychelles to review the 5-Year Business Plan for the Baie-Lazare WaterShed Committee, supported by the GOS_GEF_UNDP .

Participants included representatives from Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Natural Resources, District Administrators Ministry of Local Government and Inner Islands, Public Health Authority, Landscape and Waste Management Agency, Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust , National Sports Council, Blue Economy Research Institute at the University of Seychelles, Green Generation Seychelles, and water bottling operators.
