‘Kastom Gaden’ is a Solomons Pijin language term meaning ‘customary gardening’. Kastom Gaden Association trainers combine useful elements of customary (traditional) food production with modern approaches to create an environmentally sustainable approach to small scale food production for villagers. The Kastom Gaden Association was created when the Kastom Garden Programme (KGP) ended in 2001.

Partnership for Community Support and Food Security🪴🥬🌽

Kastom Gaden Association (KGA) is pleased to acknowledge its partnership with Solomon To***co in supporting communities through agriculture development and food security initiatives.

Through this collaboration, more than 35,000 vegetable seedlings were successfully distributed to targeted communities in and around Honiara during the last week of May and the first week of June 2026.

The seedlings included a variety of nutritious crops:
🥬Chinese cabbage
🍅Tomatoes
🎃 Pumpkins
🌽Corns
🍆Eggplants
🌱Beans
🥬Lettuce
🌶Pepper

Seedlings were delivered on 27th May and 2nd June to:
📍NZ camp (Henderson Area) - 10,000 plus seedlings
📍LDA (Betikama Area) - 10,000 plus seedlings
📍Burns Creek - 15,000 plus seedlings

The idea behind this is to help communities have enough food for household consumption and potentially produce surplus for sale following proper and fair distribution within the communities. This would support both nutrition and income generation.

KGA sincerely thanks Solomon To***co for this support and shared commitment to empowering communities. Together, we continue to promote agriculture based solutions that build resilience and improve livelihoods.

Thank you to all communities who received and are now planting these seedlings.
We look forward to seeing your gardens grow!

Successful Learning Exchange Program🌿

From 21st to 25th May 2026, Kastom Gaden Association (KGA) in partnership with Plan International Solomon Islands successfully hosted a Learning Exchange Program for participants involved in the Y3CER project.

A total of 10 participants took part in the program:

5 participants from Tathi, Central province
5 participants from Aruligho, Northwest Guadalcanal

Over the 5 days, participants had the opportunity to visit and learn from key sites, including:
🌿Kastom Gaden Association (KGA) Farm Demonstration site at Burnscreek
🌿Zai Na Tina Organic farm at Burnscreek
🌿 Organic Products at KG, Old Taiwanese Farm
🌿Kokonut Pacific Solomon Islands (KOSI)
🌿Gwaunafiu Organic Farmers School, Central Kwara’ae, Malaita province

The purpose of this learning exchange was to expose participants to organic and sustainable crop and vegetable production, product development, value adding and market as well as climate-resilient farming practices. Through hands-on learning and knowledge sharing, participants gained new ideas and practical skills that they can take back to their communities.

This initiative will help strengthen local farming systems, improve food security, and build resilience as participants share what they have learned with others.

KGA would like to sincerely thank all participants, host communities and partner organizations for making this learning exchange a success. Your cooperation and commitment to sustainable agriculture continue to inspire stronger, healthier communities.

All photographs were taken throughout the program at the various sites.

CRF-PI Community Support in Western Province

From 4th to 15th May 2026, Kastom Gaden Association (KGA) carried out a field visit to communities in Western Province following the impacts of TC Maila.

Our team was grateful to visit and work alongside the communities of Narovo, Riguru, Tapurai, and Nusa Simbo, supporting recovery efforts through the Climate Resilient Farming in the Pacific Islands (CRF-PI) project.

During the visit, KGA staff assisted communities by:
🪴Distributing vegetable seed packets and seedlings
⛏Providing basic farm tools
🌿Building community and household nursery shade structures
🌱Conducting backyard gardening trainings

These activities aim to help families quickly restore their food gardens, strengthen local food security, and build resilience against future climate impacts.

We are inspired by the strength and cooperation shown by these communities as they recover and rebuild. KGA remains committed to supporting rural farmers with practical skills, resources, and knowledge in both kastom and climate-resilient practices.

🫱🏾‍🫲🏽A big thank you to all community members for your warm welcome and active participation.

All photos were taken at the communities.
