Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change

Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change We are taking Climate Change to the World's Highest Court!

This is Edmund’s story.

Land lost. Culture eroded. Identity threatened — by a crisis he and his community did not create.

His people keep going. But resilience was never meant to be a substitute for justice. As climate change intensifies, their futures grow more uncertain, more dangerous.

This is not just a stark headline. This is their lived reality and we must fix it before it is too late.

There is a place where the sea used to stop.
Where children played. Where elders told stories under the shade of trees. Those tall trees stood, holding the soil for what felt like a promise of eternity, providing shelter from strong winds and cyclones. He went back recently. The shore had retreated. With no warning or announcement. Only the arrival of water, where a childhood used to be. This is where his story begins.

The Witness Stand Project is a initiative by Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change that brings together community testimony, legal analysis, and storytelling to document the lived impacts of climate change across the Pacific region.

The PISFCC journey started with youth, and it continues to be carried by youth.

From the shores of the Pacific to the halls of the International Court of Justice, young people have led with courage, culture, and conviction, turning lived experiences into legal history.

This International Youth Day, we celebrate every young leader across the world and encourage all youth to realise their potential in contributing to a sustainable future for everyone!

Right now, the Pacific is heading into a strong El Niño with sea surface temperatures forecast to record 2.9°C above normal through October, according to the WMO.

Some regions are likely to experience wetter conditions due to increased rainfall, while other areas risk increased droughts.

This is exactly the kind of harm the ICJ ruled on, that states have a legal duty to prevent it and not just watch it unfold.

There needs to be greater climate action to prevent natural phenomena like El Niño from causing further disruption to our environment.

More than a year on, the Advisory Opinion is and always has been more than just a court ruling.

It’s international law. Now, we operationalise it.

One year ago, over 100 people from across the Pacific and beyond shared their stories with the world's highest court. Stories of rising seas, disappearing homes, and communities fighting to hold on to what they love.

Those voices helped shape history at the ICJ during the proceedings and in the landmark Advisory Opinion on climate change.

Today, one year later, we're not stopping. We're launching Phase 2 of The Witness Stand Project, because these stories don't end with one court case. The realities frontline communities face, and the exacerbating climate harm need to be spoken about. The ICJ Advisory Opinion itself has made a call for harm to be remedied. Phase II of the Witness Stand is the first step we take in ensuring harm is remedied.

Here is a quick peek at some of the stories.
