Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change

Behind me, a freshwater stream once ran to the sea. My grandmother walked to it. My mother after her. Now it is dry, and the tide keeps rising.

Across the Pacific, our streams are disappearing. Our mangroves are sand and bleached coral. Our gardens struggle. We buy tinned fish instead of catching it ourselves.

I think of my grandson, and the generations after him.

We are resilient but resilience is not acceptance.
My heart is with Kiribati, Tuvalu, and every Pacific sister nation. We deserve safety, dignity, and a future.

This is not just a climate impact. This is climate harm.

She used to watch her grandmother, then her mother, walk down to a freshwater stream that wound through the trees and around the rocks before meeting the sea.
It fed them, washed them, sustained them.

Today, that stream is dry. The beach has shrunk.
The mangroves are gone, replaced by piles of bleached coral.

The 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting was held last week in the pristine paradise of Belau 🇵🇼

The meeting concluded with two outcome documents that will help guide the Pacific region’s response to the ongoing climate crisis and other challenges our islands are facing.

Vanuatu's Climate Minister Hon. Ralph Regenvanu delivered a direct message to the world's major emitters at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau on the UNEP overshoot report release to stop expanding fossil fuels, and start transitioning away.
This isn't a request anymore. Since the ICJ's 2025 advisory opinion, 1.5°C isn't an aspiration or a stretch target it's the agreed primary temperature goal under the Paris Agreement, and states are legally bound to pursue it.
Every fraction of a degree. Every year of delay. For Pacific nations, it's not abstract it's reefs, freshwater, and land.

In the latest report by UN Environment Programme titled ‘Limiting Overshoot’, it confirms that the world is on a hot path towards exceeding 1.5°C.

The pathway back exists, but political will needs to be more serious than ever.

Yesterday, Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change hosted a side event at PIFLM55 to highlight the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Advisory Opinion on Climate Change, what it means for the Pacific, and how the Pacific should utilise and implement the AO in our collective fight for climate justice.

The Panel Discussion was moderated by Dylan Kava of the Pacific Islands Climate Action Network (PICAN) and consisted of an esteemed panel: Permanent Secretary Sivendra Michael, Climate Envoy of the RMI Tina Stege, Vanuatu Ministerial Advisor Johanna Gusman (she/her), and PISFCC’s very own Vishal Prasad.

Talanoa covered topics such as the AO and the United Nations Secretary General Report, taking a regional approach towards operationalising the AO, the AO in the lead up to and at COP31, as well as the AO and NDCs.

It was a fantastic opportunity to learn from the panel and to engage with the audience, too.

Edmund watched the impacts of climate change unfold across Vanuatu, and carries that with him. A tale of lost identity, history, and land, with no clear answer for what the future holds for the young people who will inherit it one day… if there’s anything left to inherit.

This is why the ICJ Advisory Opinion matters. It’s not abstract law, it’s protecting Edmund’s home, and every home like it.
