MASI is the Media Association of the Solomon Islands. We have been established since the 1980s. MASI is registered as a not-for-profit making organization.
MASI is responsible for maintaining the honor, integrity and independence of the Solomon Islands media and to ensure the media achieves the highest standards of journalistic ethics and reporting in their day to day activities.
MASI represents the interests of all media, this includes print, radio, television and on-line; and all persons working in the media industry across government, industry, not-for-profit and community-based media, communication and advertising.
Our Mission
To provide strong leadership and support members of the media industry, its stakeholders and the community to provide up-to-date, quality news and information to all Solomon Islanders without fear or favor.
Our OBJECTIVES
· Encourage industry members to operate at the highest standards of journalistic ethics and reporting.
· The promotion, observance and protection of human rights and liberties including the protection of the rights to information and the maintenance of media freedoms in the Solomon Islands.
· Facilitate and strengthen positive relations with public, community groups, government and NGO’S, and industry
· Promote interests and improve the welfare and rights of individuals and organizations in the media industry
· Establish MASI as a strong, forthright, independent and viable organization
Some key INITIATIVES
· Examine the benefits of a media ombudsman and/or a media practitioner’s bill for the Solomon Islands
· Improve understanding of the media within ministry and elected leaders
· Facilitate workshops and training for our members most especially journalists
· Establish a Prime Minister’s scholarship Award for journalists
· Establish sub-committees for certain sectors in the media industry ie; Training/Capacity building sub-committee, Sports sub-committee, media awards sub-committee, fundraising sub-committee, gender/women sub-committee
· Advocate for weekly press conferences initiative with the government (oversight committee)
· Advocate for media freedom in Solomon Islands
MASI has a code of Ethics for its Members
This code is a charter that sets the benchmark for the high professional standards that all members of the media in the Solomon Islands have a duty to maintain.
It embraces and respects the traditional values of the Solomon Islands way of life and the duty of the press to hold individuals, communities and institutions (public, profit and not for profit) to account, consistent with the freedoms of expression, freedoms of information and the public interest to know.
The code is to be honoured and interpreted not only to the latter, but also to the spirit of its intent and individuals working in the media industry for them to be members of MASI.
The media that falls under this Code of Conduct covers print, radio, on-line, social media, television, advertising, and any other forms of media emanating from Government, non-government, and industry organizations, church and community groups and individuals.
Editorial comment includes the views of the owners, editors or journalists or articles specifically provided from `outside organizations or peoples.
