Strengthening Community Disaster Preparedness in Binu Community
From 11–13 August 2026, the Ola Fou Solomons (OFS) team conducted a Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) Training with the Binu community as part of the SAFE Programme, funded by Tearfund New Zealand and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).
The three-day training brought together 29 participants, representing community leaders, women, and youth. The training focused on strengthening the community’s capacity to prepare for and respond to disasters through the development of two important tools:
📌 Community Disaster Action Plan
📌 Community Disaster Response Plan
These plans are being developed by the community, for the community, ensuring that local knowledge, experiences, capacities, and priorities are reflected in their disaster preparedness and response arrangements.
OFS is grateful to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and the Guadalcanal Provincial Disaster Office for providing their officers to co-facilitate the training alongside the OFS team. Their technical support and partnership contributed greatly to the successful delivery of the training.
Following the training, the draft plans will be reviewed and further strengthened by the OFS team in collaboration with the Guadalcanal Provincial Disaster Office before they are shared with the wider Binu community.
The process will culminate in a community simulation exercise, providing an opportunity to test the plans and identify areas for further improvement.
