Yesterday, our youths had the incredible opportunity to learn from professional journalists: Jeremy Gwao and Emma Komasi, as they shared practical insights based on the wealth of knowledge from their journalism careers. The session focused primarily on the proper use of social media tools and the role journalism has in the gathering, assimilation, and dissemination of reliable information.
We believe that by knowing the importance of journalism and the proper use of social media tools, our youths will grow up to become well-informed, responsible citizens of our country who knows how to use social media tools, and the knowledge that comes with them with accountability. All for the betterment of those involved. Including the task of “giving a voice to the voiceless”— representing the marginalized in society.
We live in a time in which the impact of media is everywhere— the moment we wake up, or before going to bed, social media has become a norm for most people including Christian believers. As a result of this over-saturation, people’s mood and overall behavior can be influenced on a daily basis simply by looking at a screen.
This session therefore, also serves as a valuable call-to-action for our youths to always be mindful of the impact social media can have on them or others, depending on how they use it.
We thank the G.I Youth leadership and facilitators (Jeremy and Emma) for this eye-opening session with our youths. We also extend our appreciation to our families at Papagu (Central Guadalcanal) for graciously hosting us for this Saturday’s session.
We are praying and looking forward to more engagement with our youths in the coming weeks. To God be the glory!
