North Shore Mangroves A non profit environment initiative to help mitigate climate change effects at Kwene village.

1.0 Mission
To plant 10 mangrove fruits per day all year round for the next 10 years.

2.0 Vision
The Coastal Shoreline of Kwene Village to be restored with mangrove forest by 2030 through Mangrove replanting.

3.0 Aim
The fundamental purpose of this project is to revitalize Kwene Village Coastal Line with Mangrove Afforestation.

4.0 Objectives
i)To restore and sustain the breeding ground for aquaculture species, insects and birds. ii)To act as a barrier or buffer from coastal damage from high sea rise and natural disaster. iii)To restore and sustain the mangroves forest carbon dioxide storage capacity to mitigate climate change effect. iv)To engage our community youths in planting, monitoring and to protect our mangrove plants on the project site. v)To make Kwene village free from using its mangrove habitat as an open defecation facility. vi)To be a model village for neighbouring communities in and around Maluโ€™u Area (Manaโ€™abu to New Dehli) in the fight against the effect of climate change by mangrove replanting.

5.0 Background of the initiative
The North Shore Mangroves replanting idea was established in 2017 and was implemented in 22nd to 26th December 2018. In the period of 4 days we manage to collect and planted more than 400 mangrove fruits at Kwene village coastal shore line. The program engaged the village children for the first 2 days and later joined by the village adults for the rest of the year 2019. In celebrating the first anniversary of the program Andrew Suia and Allan Maenarii of Kwene village were appointed to take the leading role in planting, monitoring and to protect our mangrove plants on the project site for the next ten (10) years.

6.0 Rationale of the project
According to the Solomon Islands state of environment report 2019, in 2000 mangroves covered an area of about 47,000 ha or almost 2% of the Solomon Islands total land area. Between the years of 1970 to 2000, mangrove forests have declined by at least 27%. It is of grave concern how there is a steady gradual depletion of Mangrove trees in the Coastal Mangrove Habitatsโ€™ in Maluu Area, Ward 8, North Malaita, Malaita province. Some 15 to 20 years ago the mangrove habitatsโ€™ were intact and was the key source of coastal primary production for nursery and breeding sites of marine and arboreal life. With the increase in coastal inhabitant populace and increased climate change effects provides an enormous burden for the mangrove habitat to rejuvenate itself to cater for the populations marine resource need. The mangrove habitat was used for sanitation purposes by the coastal dwellers. Mangroves trees were cut for local housing materials, fire woods and clearing them for canoe and boat passage. With the increasing awareness (An UNDP funded project) on the importance in using proper sanitation facilities, many communities around Maluโ€™u area were currently building and using proper toilets for the first time. Thus, it is high time to do replanting and conserving the depleting mangrove habitat that once used to be the relieving place for the general population and as it is also supported by national policy such as the national development strategy 2016 to 2035 from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology of Solomon Islands.

The Independent Group has suggested that the Government consider maritime cooperation arrangements with other bilateral partners, including China, similar to the recently signed Shiprider Agreement with the United States.

The group says if the Shiprider model is viewed as an effective mechanism to combat illegal fishing, transnational crime and other maritime challenges, then Solomon Islands should also explore similar partnerships with other friendly nations where it serves the country's national interests.

With the school fee arrangement in the rural schools (family approach), 3 more primary students (2 girls and 1 boy) indirectly benefitted.
