Critical minerals are becoming a defining frontier in energy geoeconomics — powering renewables, EVs, digital infrastructure and the AI boom.
The new IEF report looks at rising demand, concentrated supply chains, and what it will take to build resilience through diversification, circularity, innovation and transparent, rule-based markets.

As we say goodbye to 2025, we’re grateful for the trust our member countries and partners place in the IEF’s neutral platform, at a time when energy security, affordability, and transition pathways are being tested by geoeconomic and geopolitical pressures.

This year, we strengthened producer–consumer cooperation through flagship trilateral dialogues on energy outlooks, advanced energy data transparency through the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (JODI), and deepened international engagement through strategic dialogues. We brought industry experts and policymakers together to focus on climate, investment, market dynamics, and energy policy, and highlighted emerging priorities — from carbon management and hydrogen markets to critical minerals — supported by the transparency and analysis of our monthly and annual reports.

We also revitalised the IEF Industry Advisory Council (IAC), reinforcing structured engagement with industry alongside our member-led dialogue. By bringing market perspectives into the IEF’s neutral convening space, the Council strengthens the evidence base for ministerial discussions and helps ensure that policies and partnerships remain grounded in market realities.

As we welcome 2026, our focus remains the same: Dialogue is the critical infrastructure of global energy security. Listening with an open mind is where it begins. That’s how we build deeper understanding, strengthen cooperation, and reach better decisions.

With more than 60% of global critical mineral demand met through international trade, market resilience depends on cooperation, not fragmentation.
This new IEF report underscores the role of producer–consumer dialogue in improving market security, strengthening investor confidence, and supporting more resilient supply chains.
