Welsh athlete Rachel Bailey will represent Great Britain for the first time at an international tournament when she competes at the Olbia World Boccia Challenger in Italy next week.

Bailey has been selected in the BC1 tournament for the event in Sardinia, with her participation supported by Disability Sport Wales as she takes the next step in her international career.

She will be part of a six-strong British delegation at the PalaGeovillage, alongside five athletes from Boccia UK’s World Class and Talent Transition programmes.

She follows two other athletes from Wales who have represented Great Britain – Jacob Thomas in 2015 and Tomas Martin in 2024.

Turkey and Kazakhstan among Pilsen’s standout nations

The Pilsen 2026 World Boccia Challenger provided the first opportunity for many of the sport’s rising stars to test themselves in major international competition since the World Boccia Championships in Seoul.

Held from September 7-15, the first Challenger to be staged in the Czech Republic attracted athletes from 22 nations across four continents, with valuable world-ranking points available on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

Turkey emerged as one of the strongest nations in Pilsen, collecting two individual gold medals and a bronze. Havva Alyurt claimed the BC3 women’s title, while Öner Bozbiyik won BC3 men’s gold.

Previous members Daniel Michel of Australia and Argentina’s Stefania Ferrando are among six athletes who have been elected to a new six-member Athletes’ Committee within World Boccia.

The new group includes representatives from six different countries, who are now set to play a greater role in shaping the future of the sport.

The election took place during the Seoul 2026 World Boccia Championships, where more than three-quarters of the athletes competing took part in the vote.

The new committee is made up of André Ramos of Portugal, Daniel Michel of Australia, Nicholas Taylor of the USA, Sally Kidson of Great Britain, Stefania Ferrando of Argentina and Tasneem Goda of Egypt.

Indonesia’s rise to the top of the medal table was the headline act, but the bigger story from the Seoul 2026 World Boccia Championships was the way the old order was put under sustained pressure.

The formidable Indonesians finished with three golds and one silver medal, taking the BC1 men’s and women’s titles and the BC1/2 team crown.

Thailand were next with two golds and two bronzes, while Hong Kong topped the overall medal count with five. In all, 16 nations won at least one medal across the 11 events.

It was a striking outcome for a sport that has traditionally been dominated by a relatively small group of countries.

The friendships made - and the memories stored - from the World Boccia Championships in Seoul will live on for always, now that athletes, officials and supporters have made their way home.

Thanks again to all those involved in hosting such a wonderful tournament, especially our good friends and hosts at the Korea Boccia Federation and their President, Kang Sung-hee.

But don’t worry! The boccia continues with the Pilsen 2026 World Boccia Challenger tournament which has just begun in the Czech Republic.

After eight days of unforgettable memories and intense competition, this has been a weekend of goodbyes and homeward journeys.

But what a World Boccia Championships we witnessed thanks to 186 athletes from 48 nations.

We have crowned 11 world champions, handed out 33 medals to podium athletes and witnessed dramatic finishes to matches played with honour, integrity and mutual respect.

Thank you to all our athletes, assistants, coaches, officials, referees, volunteers, sponsors, spectators, broadcast staff and our host organising committee, the Korea Boccia Federation.

See you all again in 2030!

Singapore have become world champions in our last final of the day - and our last final of the tournament!

They have taken the BC3 Pairs title after beating Greece, 3-1, in an exciting match to close out our Championships.

인도네시아가 다시 한 번 승리를 거머쥐었습니다.

인도네시아는 9월 3일, 오늘 치뤄진 결승에서 포르투갈을 9-4로 꺾고 BC1/2 단체전 세계 챔피언에 올랐습니다.

이로써 인도네시아는 2026년 서울 세계보치아선수권대회에서 금메달 3개를 획득하며 메달 순위 1위를 확정하였습니다.
