World Boccia has approved sweeping governance reforms designed to modernise its structure, strengthen accountability and ensure the sport’s international federation remains fit for the future.

The changes were unanimously backed by members during an Extraordinary General Assembly (EGA) last weekend.

Delegates voted 28-0 in favour of amendments to the organisation’s Articles of Association, with one abstention recorded due to a technical voting issue.

The reforms represent the first comprehensive review of World Boccia’s constitutional framework since 2017 and form part of a wider programme of governance improvements being undertaken by the federation.

A year after Itiana Shingiskhanova made history by winning Kazakhstan's first home international boccia gold medal, Astana is preparing to host its biggest event yet as the Astana 2026 World Boccia Cup gets underway.

The tournament marks another major milestone for the sport in Central Asia, with athletes from 25 countries gathering in the Kazakh capital for a full World Boccia World Cup competition.

The promotion follows the success of the Astana 2025 World Boccia Challenger, which was the first international boccia tournament ever staged in Kazakhstan.

That event produced a memorable moment for the host nation when Astana-born Shingiskhanova captured the BC2 title in front of home supporters.

Her triumph highlighted both her own talent and the growing development of Paralympic sport in Kazakhstan.

Now, just 12 months later, Astana has been rewarded with an upgrade from Challenger status to a full World Cup event, underlining the success of last year's competition and the country's growing reputation as a host of international boccia.

Chantal Van Engelen backed up her individual gold at BC2 Female by leading the Netherlands to another gold in the BC1/2 Team event at the Pajulahti 2026 World Boccia Challenger tournament
The Dutch team beat Great Britain in the final with Italy taking the bronze.

Slovakia took gold ahead of Ukraine in the BC4 Pairs event, whilst France won the BC3 Pairs competition after defeating Italy in the final.

Congratulations to all the Pairs and Team medal winners in Finland.
