As we mark the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, The Rwanda Commonwealth Games Association joins Rwandans and the international community in solemn remembrance of the lives lost. The King’s Baton X Rwandan Tradition Dance (Intore)

The King’s Baton celebrates the rich diversity and vibrant cultures of The Commonwealth. As it travels across nations, it highlights each country’s unique traditions through music, dance, art, and sport, while reminding us of our shared values of unity, respect, and friendship.

The Baton serves as a bridge between cultures, inspiring pride, connection, and appreciation of the Commonwealth’s strength in diversity.

This Saturday, October 25, 2025, the Commonwealth Games Association of Rwanda (CGA Rwanda), in collaboration with the British High Commission, the British Council, and the Ministry of Sports - Rwandas, joined the community of Rubavu District to celebrate the King’s Baton Relay (KBR) for the fourth time in Rwanda.

In line with the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign, CGA Rwanda and partners collected plastic waste and planted trees along the shores of Lake Kivu, aligning the initiative with this month’s community work, Umuganda. The celebration also featured a 3x3 Basketball Interschool Tournament, where Collège Inyemeramihigo (girls) and Gacuba II (boys) emerged as champions.

During the celebrations:

🏀 H.E. Alison Thorpe, British High Commissioner, expressed delight at the strong community participation and joined in planting trees. She highlighted that Rwanda’s Baton design; featuring Amahoro Stadium, the Kigali Convention Centre, Gorillas, and Cycling; symbolizes resilience and progress after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

🏀 CGA Rwanda President, Ms. Alice Umulinga, stated:
“The performances we witnessed today are a testament to our readiness to make an impact at Glasgow 2026. I encourage you all to keep training hard and continuously improve your performance, so that one day we can see you shine on global stages.”

She added that the Baton’s message for Rwanda is “Talent”, perfectly aligned with the national vision of empowering young people through sport.

🏀 Mr. Fabrice Uwayo from the Ministry of Sports said:
“You have represented your schools with great spirit and determination. Dream big, push your limits, and make Rwanda proud, just as today’s Baton Bearers have done.”

🏀 Hon. Prudence Sebahizi, Minister of Trade and Industry, reflected on his sports background and urged the youth to remain disciplined, persistent, and to never give up.

Rwanda’s marks the conclusion of the Baton’s journey across Africa before it continues to Asia; a celebration of unity, diversity, and the shared values of the Commonwealth.

Today, as we mark the 31st Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the Rwanda Commonwealth Games Association joins the nation in remembering the victims and standing in unwavering solidarity with the survivors.

As we reflect on Rwanda’s journey of unity, reconciliation, and resilience, we reaffirm our commitment to harnessing the power of sport to educate future generations about our history and to contribute to a peaceful, united, and prosperous nation.
