SREB Attends the 21st Edition of Kwita Izina 2026

On 4 September 2026, Save the Rwandan Environment and Biodiversity (SREB) had the privilege of attending the 21st edition of Kwita Izina, Rwanda’s annual gorilla naming ceremony. The event brought together conservationists, government representatives, development partners, researchers, communities, and distinguished guests from Rwanda and around the world to celebrate Rwanda’s remarkable commitment to protecting its natural heritage. During this year’s ceremony, 22 baby mountain gorillas were officially named, marking another important milestone in Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to conserve the endangered mountain gorilla population and protect its natural habitat.

For SREB, participating in Kwita Izina was an opportunity to connect with fellow conservation actors, celebrate Rwanda’s achievements in biodiversity conservation, and reaffirm our commitment to environmental protection and sustainable biodiversity management. The success of Rwanda’s gorilla conservation efforts demonstrates what can be achieved when strong conservation policies, scientific research, community engagement, sustainable tourism, and partnerships come together. SREB is proud to be part of Rwanda’s growing conservation community and remains committed to supporting initiatives that protect wildlife, ecosystems, biodiversity, and the communities that depend on nature.

Together, let us protect our biodiversity and build a sustainable future for people and nature.

🌍 World Environment Day 2026 🌿

Today, on World Environment Day, we join millions of people around the world in celebrating our planet and renewing our commitment to protect it for present and future generations.

At Save the Rwandan Environment and Biodiversity (SREB), we recognize that a healthy environment is the foundation of sustainable development, human well-being, and biodiversity conservation. From protecting forests and wetlands to promoting climate resilience and safeguarding wildlife, every action we take today shapes the future of our communities and our planet.

This year's celebration reminds us that environmental protection is not the responsibility of governments and organizations alone, it is a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of every individual, family, school, business, and community.

We call upon all Rwandans and global citizens to:
✅ Plant and protect trees
✅ Reduce pollution and waste
✅ Conserve water and natural resources
✅ Protect wildlife and biodiversity
✅ Support sustainable environmental practices
✅ Take action against climate change

Together, we can build a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.

World Environmental Education Day | SREB Rwanda
Today, on World Environmental Education Day, SAVE THE RWANDAN ENVIRONMENT AND BIODIVERSITY (SREB) highlights the power of community-driven environmental education.
By engaging local communities, especially youth and farmers, in learning about Rwanda’s ecosystems, sustainable farming, and biodiversity, we turn knowledge into action. Communities become active guardians of forests, wildlife, and natural resources, helping to restore habitats, protect endangered species, and fight climate change.
Environmental education is not just about awareness—it is about empowerment. When people understand the value of their environment, they make choices that ensure a sustainable future for all.
Learn → Act → Protect
Communities empowered through education are the strongest allies of nature
