German Sparkassenstiftung Eastern Africa

German Sparkassenstiftung Eastern Africa We pursue to improve lives by sustainably promoting financial inclusion in Eastern Africa. Think globally, act locally, cooperate internationally.

In 1992, Germanyโ€™s Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe established the "Deutsche Sparkassenstiftung fรผr internationale Kooperation e.V." (DSIK), respectively "German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation" in English . German Sparkassenstiftung is actively supporting stakeholders in the financial sector all over the world, promoting a sustainable development at local, national and regional level. By

strengthening decentral financial structures and facilitating access, uptake and
usage of quality financial services, DSIK ultimately contributes to the generation of jobs and development options for broad segments of the population. This mirrors the approach that has been pursued by the German Sparkassen Banks since their establishment around 200 years ago. It exerts a stabilizing effect on the financial sector and the overall economic development in the respective country. German Sparkassenstiftung Eastern Africa works on partnership projects that focus on strengthening of the microfinance sector and vocational education. Currently, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is financially supporting two Regional Projects for the Eastern African countries Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The two Regional Projects are "Vocational and Commercial Education" and "Rural Development through Institutional Strengthening". The transboundary project approach facilitates the exchange between the neighboring countries. Overall, DSIK has been permanently active in Rwanda since 2009, in Burundi and Tanzania since 2012, in Uganda since 2018 and in Kenya since 2019.

The journey to a greener future begins with leaders who choose to act today.

Cooperative leaders from Lango SACCOs gathered in Lira, Lango Sub-region, Uganda, for a Green Finance and Product Development Training, where they committed to becoming champions of sustainable finance and ambassadors of change within their SACCOs.

The training highlighted how integrating green finance into financial products and operations can help SACCOs build resilience, support environmentally responsible enterprises and create lasting value for their members and communities.

Real change starts with knowledge, collaboration and action. We are proud to see these leaders taking the next step toward driving sustainable transformation across Uganda's cooperative sector.
Thank you to all the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment and to our partners, Uganda Cooperative Savings and Credit Union, for making this initiative possible. Together, we are cultivating a future where financial inclusion and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. ๐Ÿ’š

This week we continue our field visits to trainers and beneficiaries under our Digital Financial Education (DFE) programme. On Tuesday, we joined a DFE facilitator from AVSI Rwanda to observe the training environment and see the sessions in action.

Our team is reviewing the programme's progress, challenges, possible solutions, participants' profiles and their expectations, all to keep strengthening the impact on the ground.
We were glad to attend and support a training session on loan management, with more than 20 beneficiaries taking part.

Financial education is a journey best walked alongside the people it serves.
What role do you think loan management skills play in building financial resilience?

Lat week, in partnership with Uganda Cooperative Saving and Credit Union, we proudly concluded a Farmers Business Game Training for rice farmers from Doho Farmers SACCO in Butaleja District, Eastern Uganda.

In a region where agriculture drives household livelihoods, the training brought together smallholder rice farmers to strengthen their skills in financial management, business planning, decision making and risk management, helping them run more sustainable and profitable farming enterprises.

By empowering farmers with practical financial and entrepreneurial skills, we are contributing to stronger rural livelihoods, more resilient farming businesses and inclusive economic growth.
What role do you think financial literacy plays in transforming smallholder farming into a sustainable business?
