German Sparkassenstiftung Eastern Africa

German Sparkassenstiftung Eastern Africa We pursue to improve lives by sustainably promoting financial inclusion in Eastern Africa. Think globally, act locally, cooperate internationally.

In 1992, Germanyโ€™s Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe established the "Deutsche Sparkassenstiftung fรผr internationale Kooperation e.V." (DSIK), respectively "German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation" in English . German Sparkassenstiftung is actively supporting stakeholders in the financial sector all over the world, promoting a sustainable development at local, national and regional level. By

strengthening decentral financial structures and facilitating access, uptake and
usage of quality financial services, DSIK ultimately contributes to the generation of jobs and development options for broad segments of the population. This mirrors the approach that has been pursued by the German Sparkassen Banks since their establishment around 200 years ago. It exerts a stabilizing effect on the financial sector and the overall economic development in the respective country. German Sparkassenstiftung Eastern Africa works on partnership projects that focus on strengthening of the microfinance sector and vocational education. Currently, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is financially supporting two Regional Projects for the Eastern African countries Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The two Regional Projects are "Vocational and Commercial Education" and "Rural Development through Institutional Strengthening". The transboundary project approach facilitates the exchange between the neighboring countries. Overall, DSIK has been permanently active in Rwanda since 2009, in Burundi and Tanzania since 2012, in Uganda since 2018 and in Kenya since 2019.

๐ŸŽ‰ Another milestone achieved!

We are excited to share that COOPEC Ikirenga is now live on eKash, Rwandaโ€™s national digital payment system powered by RSwitch.

This marks a significant step toward greater interoperability and enhanced financial services for COOPEC Ikirengaโ€™s members. Clients can now seamlessly transact across banks, SACCOs and mobile money platforms, making financial services more accessible, efficient and convenient.

This achievement builds on a strong partnership between DSIK and COOPEC Ikirenga over the past two years. Since its establishment, DSIK has supported the SACCO in key areas including automation, push/pull services, mobile lending solutions and now integration with eKash.

As Rwanda continues to advance its digital financial ecosystem, milestones like this demonstrate the power of collaboration in driving financial inclusion and innovation.

Congratulations to COOPEC Ikirenga and all partners involved in making this possible! ๐Ÿš€

in Rwanda was proud to participate in the 2026 TVET Annual Retreat held at Epic Mantis Suites, Nyagatare.

The retreat provided an important platform for dialogue and collaboration on strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) systems to meet the evolving needs of the labour market.

As Rwanda continues to advance its transformation agenda, investing in market-relevant skills, innovation and workforce readiness remains critical to creating opportunities for young people, enhancing productivity and fostering sustainable economic growth.

We value the collective commitment of all stakeholders working to build a skilled, resilient, and future-ready workforce.

From Farming to Agribusiness: Empowering Groundnut Farmers to Add Value and Access Better Markets.

Last week, together with Uganda Cooperative Saving and Credit Union (UCSCU), we concluded a Business Hub Training for groundnut farmers from Namayingo Buinja (NABU) SACCO in Eastern Uganda.

The training focused on transforming farming from a subsistence activity into a profitable business. Farmers gained practical entrepreneurship skills to strengthen their ability to manage and grow sustainable agribusinesses.

A key highlight was exploring the groundnut value chain and identifying opportunities for local value addition through processing, grading and packaging. The discussions challenged participants to think beyond selling raw ground nuts and instead explore higher-value products that can unlock better market opportunities and increased incomes.

Participants left not only with practical tools and business knowledge, but also with a renewed entrepreneurial mindset to grow their businesses โ€” not just their yields.
