Based on the conviction that creativity, leisure and play are essential to post genocide reconstruction, Esperance was created as a sport club by a group of youngsters in the aftermath of the Rwandan catastrophe of 1994. One of their initial activities was the reconstruction of football pitches. From the start, they were determined to actively involve both young men and young women. Building on th

is experience, Esperance started to use football as a medium for social development by creating the tool FOOTBALL AMAHORO (Kinyarwanda for Football for Peace). It requires that the same number of girls and boys play on the same team. Moreover, there are no referees. This setting is meant to strengthen coeducation, fair-play-spirit, auto-responsibility, and the players' conflict resolution skills. Recently, Esperance has combined Football Amahoro with Forum Theatre, a methodology elaborated by the Brazilian theatre expert Agosto Boal. The key objective of Football Forum Theatre is to explore learning opportunities for beneficiaries, such as peers, siblings, parents, and neighbors. Esperance's ongoing introduction of this art form to the world of football is drawing a great deal of attention everywhere in the world. Next to its social commitment, Esparance is also organizing competitive sport, particularly for football teams. All age groups of both sexes are targeted.

Rwandan and German youth exchange on the Genocides. Rwandan horrible history is marked by the Genocide against Tutsis in 1994 and Germany marked by the Holocaust in 1933. ESPERANCE Ngo has youth exchange programs which brings together young Rwandans and Germans and discuss about a better World where peace, love, unity, tolerance and many more good values can mark our history in the future. We thank everyone who attended the exchange for your participative contribution.

Today, we mourn the Tutsis who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis and we honour their stolen dignity. We pay tribute to the survivors, whose resilience shows the strength of the human spirit. The 1994 Genocide against Tutsis lasted for 100 days and resulted in the murder of more than a million of Tutsis. We, Association des jeunes sportifs de Kigali ESPERANCE, call upon the youth, fathers and mothers, sportive or not, on national and international level to act against modern-day hate speech.
“We chose life. We chose unity. We chose hope. We rebuilt families, communities, and nations. That is resilience.” Marcel Mutsindashyaka (Survivor of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis)

Last Saturday, January 17th, organised by our German volunteer Mattes Rudolph, Espérance successfully hosted its first Life Skills Workshop with participants of the Youth League Project 25/26. Our local and international volunteers came together in Kabuye to facilitate a Sports for Development workshop that focused on violence prevention and the positive role football — and sport in general — can play in promoting peace and social cohesion.

We highlighted how sport can serve as a powerful tool for teaching values such as respect, teamwork, fair play and conflict resolution. The young footballers were encouraged to reflect on their own experiences, both on and off the pitch, and to explore non-violent ways of dealing with conflict in their communities.

This workshop marks the beginning of a longer-term Life Skills program that we are aiming to establish as part of the Youth League Project. The goal of this program is to demonstrate the positive impact of sport beyond physical activity, emphasizing its potential to shape social behavior, strengthen leadership skills and foster a culture of mutual understanding. By using football as a common language, we seek to empower young people to become role models and agents of positive change within their teams and communities.

IMPACT STORY

MY FEELINGS AS A VOLUNTEER IN ESPERANCE

My name is Aline UWAMAHORO. My feelings as a volunteer in Esperance are very good and I feel happy because I have a role in helping children and also I feel proud to be part of a good family that works for a better future for children.
But It is not only about helping children and it also helped me personally because I got new skills that I didn’t have before, for example, when I first came to Esperance honestly I didn’t know how to play any game at all but during my time here that changed me I started learning different games slowly and now I try to play table tennis, basketball and even volleyball. I may not be the best in those games but every time I play I feel like I have grown and honestly it’s not like before.

And anothee big change in me is the way I think and the confidence I have today. To be honest When I first came in Espernce I was told that I would help children in the library and also teach them during our Saturday programs but Honestly I was afraid and I asked myself how can I stand in front of people and teach them? I didn’t have any idea that time because usually I used to be a person who feared standing in front a group of people and I couldn’t even imagine speaking to many people, even standing in front of children was difficult for me but Esperance gave me the chance to try and I changed and the more I stood in front of the children the less fear I felt and today I can teach them without a problem and I also play with them and talk to them like friends now and I am used to it and I can do it without fear and the children and I have become friends and I learned how to live well with them. honestly This is something I never thought I could do before joining Esperance.
And also in this context Esperance also helped me to grow through their programs where we are often given topics to present and even though it is hard at first but it becomes a good way to learn how to speak in front of people step by step and with time I realized these activities are helping me to speak in public and every time I spoke I felt my fear become smaller and my courage become bigger and now I no longer see speaking in front of people as a problem instead I see it as a gift. And the best part is that this gift will stay with me for life even beyond Esperance.

And I also feel happy in Esperance because I have made new friends that I didn’t have before but now I have people I play with, work with, and learn with and also we share games together that I mentioned before and we also work together every day in programs to help children and this teamwork makes me feel like I am part of a big family where everyone supports one another.

AmAnother important benefit of being in Esperance is that I had the chance to learn new languages. Before I didn’t know anything about German but I found that Esperance has a program for teaching German I joined and now I can say I have improved a lot even if I am not perfect at German language yet but it is not like before. I can see real progress and that gives me hope to keep learning and honestly this is something I couldn’t imagine before joining Esperance but It shows me that being in this organization doesn’t only give me a chance to help others but also gives me a chance to grow and build my own future.

Briefly , I feel very good and proud to be a volunteer in Esperance because It’s not only about helping children in different ways but also about how much I have grown personally and I have learnt new skills , built my confidence, gained new friends and even learned new language. For me this is a blessing and I see Esperance as a place that changes not only the lives of children but also the lives of volunteers like me. And I am truly happy and grateful to be one of the volunteers in Esperance.
