UNICEF Rwanda welcomed the Czech National Committee for UNICEF UNICEF Česká republika for a visit that brought our partnership to life.

Numbers and reports can only tell part of the story. This visit gave the delegation a chance to see, firsthand, the children, families, and communities whose lives are touched by this partnership, and to understand the lasting difference it makes in Rwanda.

We are grateful for the trust, generosity, and shared commitment behind this collaboration. Support like this lays the groundwork for a stronger, brighter future for children across Rwanda.

Happy Umuganura Day to everyone across Rwanda! 🌾🇷🇼

Today, UNICEF was honoured to join Inteko y'Umuco Rwanda and Rusizidistrict in celebrating the 2026 National Umuganura, reaffirming our partnership with the Government of Rwanda and our shared commitment to every child.

One of the most meaningful moments of the day was sharing milk with children—a simple but powerful gesture that reflects the true spirit of Umuganura: gratitude, generosity and caring for one another.

As families celebrate the harvest, we're reminded that there are two harvests worth celebrating. One fills tables across the country. The other is found on the plates of Rwanda's youngest children.

Every bean, every serving of isombe, every cup of milk and every egg helps nourish growing bodies and developing brains, giving children the healthy start they need to learn, grow and thrive.

Rwanda has set an ambitious goal of reducing child stunting to 15% by 2029. Achieving it will take the same patience, care and collective effort that every successful harvest requires.

This Umuganura, let's celebrate not only the harvest from our fields, but also the investment we make every day in the health, nutrition and future of every child.

Every harvest starts as a seed. So does every child’s future.
Today, UNICEF Rwanda has joined Inteko y'Umuco and Rusizidistrict Rusizi for the 2026 National Umuganura celebrations, reaffirming our partnership with the Government of Rwanda and our commitment to every child.
Participants shared milk with children, a simple gesture of care and solidarity.

While families bring in the season’s first fruits, there’s a second harvest happening too: a spoon of protein, a scoop of greens, a cup of milk, an egg. That harvest grows brains, builds bodies, and shapes who a child becomes.

Rwanda’s target is to reduce child stunting to 15% by 2029 and getting there isn’t one big season, it’s every meal adding up.
So today, ask what you’re planting on the smallest plates at your table. That’s the crop that never stops paying off.

Yesterday, UNICEF Rwanda Representative, Ms. Lieke van de Wiel, alonside the Deputy Director of RwandaChild Mr. Gilbert Munyemana, accompanied a delegation from the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda, led by H.E. Ambassador GAO Wenqi on a visit to Rushaki cross-border Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Gicumbi District.

The delegation met with caregivers, community members, and the District leadership to see firsthand how innovative approaches—such as the cross-border ECD model—are ensuring that vulnerable young children and their families can access integrated health, nutrition, early learning, child protection, and parenting support services, regardless of where they live.

With the support of the Government of China, UNICEF is working with the Government of Rwanda to expand access to quality ECD services, with the aim of giving every child in Rwanda the best start in life.

WHO and UNICEF’s asks for this World Breastfeeding Week are a very short list.

Stronger health systems for breastfeeding support. Community-based counselling and peer programmes. Full enforcement of marketing rules on formula. Paid maternity leave and workplace policies. Breastfeeding support built into antenatal and postnatal care and support that holds even in humanitarian crises.
Six items. None of them require new inventions.

There's an unspoken assumption behind most breastfeeding conversations - that it comes down to a mother's determination, her knowledge, her choice. Try hard enough, and it works out.

Rwanda's numbers suggest something different. 81.8% of Rwandan infants are exclusively breastfed for their first six months, tied for the highest rate in the world. That level of consistency isn't the result of individual willpower. It's the result of systems we build.

Paid maternity leave. Two daily nursing breaks built into labour law. Community health workers who reach new mothers within hours of delivery. This is part of why 85.5% of Rwandan newborns are breastfed within their first hour of life.

Worldwide, exclusive breastfeeding has climbed from 37% in 2012 to 47% today, a sign that when countries invest in the right support, the outcomes follow.

What often goes unmentioned is that the mothers also benefit. The same national rise in breastfeeding is linked to lower maternal risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

A mother's determination matters. But it's the system around her that decides whether that determination is enough.

Most funding is planned months or years in advance. A budget is set, a sector is chosen, a plan takes shape. But needs on the ground don't always follow a plan: a refugee settlement that grows faster than expected, a family raising a child with a disability who needs more support than the nearest clinic can offer, a village that's a two-hour walk from the nearest health post.

Core Resources give UNICEF the flexibility to move toward families like these as needs emerge and follow their reality and where the need is greatest, when it matters most.

Some of the greatest needs are also the hardest to plan for in advance; families in refugee settlements, children with disabilities who need more than a standard clinic visit, households up a dirt road that a project budget line never quite reached.

Core Resources help UNICEF respond to needs like these as they arise, wherever they arise.They give UNICEF the freedom to respond where the need is greatest, even when that need shifts from year to year and from one part of the country to another.
