This week in Rwanda, government officials from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Rwanda, and Uganda came together for a 5-day Regional Learning Exchange on progressive approaches to responding to refugee movements. The exchange focused on strengthening resilience, fostering social cohesion, and building stronger economies. Rwanda’s model stood out as a powerful example of what is possible when inclusion and self-reliance are embedded across systems – from access to national education, health to creating real pathways for economic participation. It created a valuable platform for meaningful dialogue on what works and what can be replicated across the region.
With participation from refugee commissions, key ministries, and refugee leadership alongside the Government of Rwanda, the initiative highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in driving sustainable solutions. A field visit to Mahama Camp, home to over 70,000 refugees, brought these discussions to life by showcasing how policies translate into real impact. Strong leadership, regional cooperation, and a shared commitment to learning remain essential in advancing refugee inclusion and self-reliance across East Africa.
