Today, as the world commemorates World Braille Day, the Rwanda Organization of Persons with Deaf-Blindness (ROPDB) joins the global community in celebrating the power of Braille as a tool of inclusion, dignity, and independence.
Braille is more than a writing system it is a lifeline of communication, a bridge to education, information, and active participation in society for persons with Deaf-Blindness. It ensures that no one is left behind in accessing learning materials, public services, justice, health information, and opportunities for personal growth.
In Rwanda, ROPDB continues to advocate for:
The recognition of persons with Deaf-Blindness as a distinct disability category,
Increased access to Braille literacy and tactile learning materials,
Strengthening inclusive education and rehabilitation services,
Promoting the training of teachers and interpreters skilled in tactile communication and Braille,
Ensuring that all public institutions provide accessible information in formats usable by persons with Deaf-Blindness.
On this occasion, we call upon Government institutions, development partners, civil society, and communities to partner with us in advancing equal rights and opportunities for persons with Deaf-Blindness across Rwanda.
Let today remind us that access to communication is a human right.
A society that embraces Braille is a society that embraces inclusion.
Happy World Braille Day!
