Today is World Obesity Day. Currently, 1 in 8 people worldwide are living with obesity, and by 2035, this is projected to reach 4 billion people—nearly half the global population. This is one of the defining health challenges of our time, and we cannot afford inaction.

At the Rwanda NCD Alliance, we believe it is time to change the story. Obesity is a complex disease driven by biology, environment, and access to healthy food, rather than just personal choice. Living with obesity significantly increases the risk of serious Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease, and certain cancers.

We can take action together through prevention and healthy habits. For children, this means at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity, while adults should aim for 150 minutes per week. We also encourage increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, pulses, and whole grains while limiting salt and free sugars.

Beyond individual action, we advocate for policies that make healthy diets affordable and protect children from the marketing of unhealthy foods. This year’s theme, “8 Billion Reasons to Act,” reminds us that healthier lives begin with healthier surroundings. Let’s build an environment where everyone has a real chance to thrive.
