🌱 Transforming norms to unlock opportunities for young women in agriculture

Over the past days, young community facilitators trained by RWAMREC have been equipping fellow young farmers with Gender Transformative Approaches (GTA)—addressing the root causes of inequality at the household and community level.

In partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), RWAMREC is implementing the Shora Neza project across 43 sectors in 18 districts in Rwanda.

The project tackles key gender barriers that limit women’s access to agricultural finance and markets, including:

Disproportionate unpaid care work
Limited mobility and autonomy
Low self-confidence
Restricted financial decision-making
Limited control over resources
Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

📍 Trainings have already started in 12 districts: Kayonza, Ngoma, Burera, Gakenke, Huye, Ruhango, Nyanza, Nyamasheke, Nyaruguru, Muhanga, Gatsibo, and Rulindo.

👥 By the end of the GTA trainings, 2,580 people will be reached—young farmers and their family influencers.

Because real change doesn’t happen alone.
It happens in families. In communities. Together. 💛

“Before the JOT sessions, whenever I was still at work around 7:00 pm, my phone would keep ringing… My husband would keep asking why I wasn’t home yet. It made it hard to focus on my business. Today, things are different. I can even come home at 10:00 pm freely. I feel at peace. My husband now supports me—and sometimes I find he has already prepared food and helped the children go to bed.”

Stories like Josephine’s remind us that change is possible.

The 29 couples who completed the program are now champions of change, ready to share what they’ve learned with other families in their communities.

Meet the first cohort in Rubavu—transforming not just their homes, but their entire community 💙

On International Women’s Day 2026, we celebrate the strength, leadership, and resilience of women and girls everywhere.

Achieving gender equality also means ensuring equal economic opportunities and removing the barriers that limit women’s access to financial resources, credit, employment, and leadership opportunities. When women thrive, families, communities, and economies thrive too.

At RWAMREC, we remain committed to working with women and men to transform harmful norms, promote positive masculinities, and create inclusive spaces where everyone can reach their full potential.

Together, we move closer to a future of dignity, equality, and shared prosperity for all.

As part of the lead-up to International Women’s Day on 8 March, RWAMREC contributed to a panel discussion organized by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on harmful gender norms affecting women’s economic empowerment.

RWAMREC PBW Project Coordinator Jean Bosco Rudasingwa participated in the discussion, sharing insights on how deeply rooted gender norms continue to shape economic opportunities for women and men. Social expectations that position men as primary providers and women as caregivers can limit women’s access to economic resources, leadership, and decision-making spaces.

The discussion highlighted the importance of transforming harmful gender norms and engaging men and boys as allies in promoting women’s economic empowerment and gender equality.

As we approach International Women’s Day, conversations like these remain essential to building more inclusive and equitable societies.
