Social Enterprises #1: The Coffee Shop & Sustainable Funding
Over the next four weeks, we are going to be highlighting the four social enterprises that Friends Peace House operates and the benefits that these businesses provide to students at Mwananshuti VTC, community members, and Friends Peace House programming. Currently, Friends Peace House has four types of social enterprises: a coffee shop, a hair salon, two garages, and a tailoring workshop.
Today, we are going to highlight the coffee shop.
The M & Levering Coffee Shop is located right beside the Friends Peace House office, in Kagarama, Kicukiro, Inside the compound of Eglise Evangelique des Amis au Rwanda (EEAR) and George Fox College Kagarama. It is the perfect place to stop by for some coffee or juice and a snack if you are visiting our office. It is also a great place to have a meal with friends.
Like all of our social enterprises, the coffee shop provides a variety of benefits, but today we are going to be focusing on one benefit in particular—revenue generation and sustainable funding! Both the coffee shop and the garages are operated by other organizations, using space that is rented out by Friends Peace House. These organizations pay Friends Peace House to use these spaces, and the money FPH receives goes towards funding programming at Mwananshuti VTC, providing Mwananshuti VTC with some consistent income that is not reliant on funding from external organizations. This helps to provide stability and will help Mwananshuti to be able to operate sustainably for a long time to come.
Come say hello and grab something to eat at the coffee shop if you are in the area!
