One of the community development projects we operate at Friends Peace house is the clean water project. Take a look at some photos of Friends Peace House distributing water filters to residents of Bugesera district earlier this year.

Access to safe drinking-water is a significant challenge for many residents in Bugesera District. Since 2022, Friends Peace House has collaborated with Global Access 2030 to distribute water purifiers to farmers and members of saving groups. Global Access 2030 provides water purifiers, and Friends Peace House handles their distribution, ensuring they reach those in need. These purifiers have provided families with safe drinking water, significantly reducing the risk of waterborne diseases, and improving their health.

We are grateful to Global Access 2030 for partnering with us and the hard work of staff at Friends Peace House as we work to further expand access to clean drinking water.

Last week we gathered to launch our newest project. The title of the project is “Community Reintegration: Training Genocide Convicts approaching release on Alternatives to Violence.” The goal of the project is to help reintegrate genocide convicts into their communities upon their release and to promote peaceful and non-violent ways of relating to one another.

It has been 32 years since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. After the genocide many people were convicted and sentenced to prison terms for their participation in the genocide. Three decades later many of these genocide convicts are set to be released and to rejoin their communities. This is a sensitive time for all involved and has the potential to create tensions and conflict within communities. This project aims to give genocide convicts and their communities tools and opportunities to help them navigate this transition in a peaceful way.

This project is in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and will run from April 2026-March 2029. The project has two components. The first component will involve AVP (Alternatives to Violence) training in prisons prior to convicts being released. The second component is community reconciliation activities including community dialogues, awareness campaigns, and joint peace initiatives through football games.

The project launch included MCC, staff, representatives from the Evangelical Friends Church of Rwanda, APV facilitators and Friends Peace House staff, volunteers and community members.

We are excited for the opportunity to launch this project and grateful to everyone involved in making it possible!

Transformational Mediation Training in Gikongoro

CDJP (Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission) Gikongoro is a Catholic Group from the southern province of Rwanda that reached out to Friends Peace House to learn about the Transformational Mediation Program. The group in the photo participated in a Transformational Mediation training workshop last May.

Our Transformational Mediation program began in 2014 with the goal of bringing reconciliation to broken relationships. This program not only focuses on helping individuals work out their situations and issues, but the main focus is on rebuilding relationships. This program works with people within our communities but also provides workshops to equip and train others in conflict resolution and reconciliation.

We are grateful for the many different groups equipping themselves and their communities for lives of peace.

We recently welcomed a new cohort of students to Mwananshuti VTC at both our Bugesera and Kicukiro campuses. Students will spend the next six months learning a trade, either construction or tailoring at the Bugesera campus, or automobile repair and maintenance, hairdressing, or culinary arts at the Kicukiro campus.

At the same time, we said farewell to the previous cohort of students. They are done learning in the classroom and will spend the next two months at internships practicing their trades and learning more skills.

We wish all our learners that best as they begin this new phase of education!

🌿New Goats!🐐Take a look at some recent photos of participants in our Conservation Agriculture program with their new goats.

The Conservation Agriculture (CA) program focuses on enhancing food security through sustainable agricultural practices. Participants trained as part of this program commit to teaching five of their neighbors what they have learned, creating a ripple effect in the community. Participants in the program receive goats to supply manure for farming. The first offspring of each goat is given away to a neighbor enhancing the ripple effect and increasing food security within the community.

Visit from New MCC Staff

Last Friday, we were happy to receive a visit from staff at Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), one of the partner organizations we work with. We were particularly happy to welcome two recent additions to the MCC Rwanda team, one of the Representatives for MCC Rwanda and Burundi, and the Program Manager for MCC Rwanda and Burundi. We look forward to working with them more in the future!

In the morning, we shared about our various programs and showed them around Mwananshuti Kicukiro. In the afternoon, we traveled to Bugesera to visit some participants who are part of both the Conservation Agriculture project, and also part of our Saving for Life project. We were joined by our field staff at Friends Peace House and some staff from the Peace and Development Network. It was a wonderful opportunity to share about our work and hear from participants about the impact these projects have had on their lives.

You can learn more about our community development projects, including Conservation Agriculture (CA) and Saving for Life (SFL), on our website.

Students at Mwananshuti, Bugesera have been learning about conservation agriculture practices, by working together to create a garden. The garden is on land recently purchased by Mwananshuti, beside the existing Bugesera campus. The new land allows room for a garden, a kitchen, and new buildings to give students and staff more space. Students will be able to bring their new agricultural knowledge home to their families and put their learning into action, growing food at home. We are excited to see the fruits of their labour! 🌱🌷🌹🪴🌳

📖 Educational Exchange 🌍

Earlier this week, on November 9,10, & 11, we were happy to welcome visitors from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and several MCC partner organizations to Mwana Nshuti VTC as part of an educational exchange visit. The visitors came from Ethiopia, USA, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, and Burkina Faso.

The visitors were able to visit both the Bugesera and Kicukiro campuses of Mwana Nshuti VTC and learn about the school. On Monday, we stopped by the businesses of some graduates of Mwana Nshuti VTC who have been able to start their own tailoring businesses using the skills they learned. On Tuesday, we saw some of the social enterprises that Friends Peace House operates, including a garage and coffee shop that help to provide ongoing funding for Mwana Nshuti VTC. During the visit, we were able to enjoy a couple of delicious meals prepared by students in the culinary arts class at Mwana Nshuti VTC.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share knowledge and learn from each other.

Thank you to MCC for planning this visit and thanks to our staff and students for making our visitors feel so welcome!
