Transforming Rural Livelihoods Through Conservation Agriculture in Burera.

We are excited to share the impressive results of the Conservation Agriculture (CA) Innovation Project - a one-year initiative implemented in Burera by Peace Durable and Development (PDD) through our Peace and Development Network , in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee - MCC, with support from the World Food Programme (WFP).

Through this partnership, we aim to engage youth in adopting conservation agriculture practices while promoting opportunities in climate-smart agribusiness.

Key Achievements to Date:

- 50 Youth Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) have been established, each with 25 members - empowering 1,250 young people with financial literacy and access to credit.

- 50 farm field school plots have been set up with CA techniques, serving as demonstration sites for surrounding farmers.

- Three intensive master training sessions (five days each) have been conducted for 25 Farmer Facilitators, equipping them to train other farmers in CA practices and related agribusiness opportunities.

- 25 smartphones have been distributed to Farmer Facilitators to:
✓ Access real-time weather information
✓ Share updates with other farmers
✓ Monitor and follow up on the activities of the newly created VSLA groups.

Way Forward:

- 50 climate-smart agribusiness ideas identified by farmer groups, with 35 initiatives selected for scale-up support and funding to strengthen implementation and ensure sustainability.

- Capacity building for an additional master training program will be delivered on post-harvest handling and processing, climate-smart business development, and conflict resolution within VSLAs.

This next phase will strengthen sustainability and ensure long-term impact for the groups established under the project.

From the creation of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to the installation of Farm Field Schools (FFSs) and the development of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) businesses, these are the key areas our initiative focused on.
